The Tale Continues
It is the distant future and the Imperium of Man has spread across the entire galaxy. But our days of expansion are long past. Once, when the Emperor of Man led us in battle, we were unstoppable, but no longer. The Emperor has withdrawn to Earth to rule from his Golden Throne, leaving us to fight a thousand wars of attrition in his name where our defenders die by the billions. We have small hope for support from Earth and we are losing the battle for human survival. Our only chance lies with the Space Marines, genetically modified warriors of superhuman ability and the pinnacle of human potential. But the Space Marines are few, the galaxy is large and our enemies are countless. The situation is most dire in Sub-Sector Aurelia. It is from this cluster of worlds on the very edge of the Imperium that came the Blood Ravens, a stage of the Emperor’s own Space Marines. Now savage aliens seek to overrun the sector, and break the Blood Ravens once and for all. Captain Davian Thule and a handful of Space Marines lead the raw recruits defending these worlds. Yet, another Space Marine prepares to join this desperate battle, a newly promoted Commander, ready to lead in our darkest hour. You are this Space Marine.

Gameplay
Dawn of War II is split between campaign-based gameplay playable as a Space Marine, at the bottom of singleplayer and co-op action, and skirmish gameplay in which players can play as any of the four playable factions in singleplayer or multiplayer battles. In the case of these multiplayer conflicts, gameplay and matchmaking is supported via the Sports meeting for Windows LIVE gaming service. In addition, unlike previous Dawn of War sports meeting or expansions, Dawn of War II features an increased and more realistic acknowledgment of the importance of cover. To that end players will notice that some environments in-game are now fully or partly destructible by certain units in their arsenal, adding to the battlefield carnage and the need for players to plot their approach and choose their playable units and battlefields wisely.

This is a fabulous game. I am still waiting for that splendid COD GOW stylishness game for 40K but until then this game and its predecessor ROCKS!!!
Are the idiots that are complaining for real? Upset about needing an Internet connection? Excellent grief!! You do not deserve to play PC sports meeting if that is an issue for you. Go back to AOL and play Bejeweled.
I have had no crashes which is a real Windows miracle (I use Win 7) Steam is splendid, although I wish there had been a cheaper download option for the game. I also reflect the developer is screwing up having no Mac version.
I read one review that complained you could not restart missions until you got it exactly right and got all the special drops. WHAT A BABY!!! Play better. I like that the game punishes you for sloppy commanding. If you work your battles in a truly organized military manner you will have no problems. If you cannot handle it go back to some other less capable RTS.
I am really looking forward to the expansions!!!

Wish that I had read the other reviews before opening the game. It requires internet connection to install the game, first to install Windows Live and then Steam. Then the game installs, only with internet connection, and yet again, internet connection is needed to run the game the 1st time.
This is not excellent for those of us using air cards or other wireless services, where we pay by the amount of data. If you have an internet service that charges by amount of data sent/ received, you seriously need to reconsider prior to purchasing this game.
If you are in the military and ration in Iraq or Afghanistan AVOID this game! Without an unclassified internet connection, you can not install or play this game. We all know that trying to connect a personal computer on a government LAN is not excellent. It’s not like Time Warner or Comcast is available for internet service overseas.
What is frustrating is that you are required to make accounts before playing the game. If you are unable to play the game (in my case insufficient graphics card capability, even after updates) you’ll have wasted a lot of time, not to mention the cost of this game.
Had the game loaded with the option to conduct a graphics card and system check prior to installing, it would have prevented the past three hours of frustration, and the need to make the account.
Wish that game developers would offer free program to download and test our systems before we buy the game. Would have saved $50+.
Also missing are the uninstall options for the Windows Live, Steam, and DoW2. Uninstalls have to be performed manually and make sure you check for hidden files and folders too.
DoW Winter Assault is my favorite of the series so far, having bought up to Dark Crusade.
Had all the small print (graphics card, registration, install process, etc) been fully published in the magazine sneak peaks and game website, would have saved time and cash in not purchasing this product.
I am very disappointed. Was really excited about this game being released but am unable to play it or give it to my friend who may have a graphics card capable of playing it. Had already registered and made account. Grrrr… Avoid.
It’s a bring shame on too, like Relic as a company, not sure after being burned with the buy if I’ll recommend or buy any of their future harvest.

Had a lot of hope for the game, but forget the link with Steam. This makes the game completely unplayable. My computer and internet link well exceed the minimum supplies and I still had a terrible time loading the game and staying linked to the Steam site. Took forever to load updates and mega interuptions. Best advice….don’t even reflect about buying this mess. One could only hope that in the future Relic gets the message from copious fans and never again uses this link to Steam for a game system.

First of all you can not make a base in DOW 2 like you could in 1…bases are not even in this game. You get a set army which you can not replenish…ever…
This should not have even been called dawn of war as it plays noting likes its mother. Maybe they should have called it 40k battlemarch as it plays much more like a battlemarch game.
