Not what I expected for my daughter. Game is VERY different from the movie. Lots of reading so not excellent for small kids. By and large, not a excellent pick on my part for my 5 yr ancient.

I’m a huge fan of Oz (not the horrid Judy Garland vehicle, but the original books from which this game draws inspiration from), a huge fan of anime, and a huge of Japanese RPGs. Crash all of them together, then place it on the DS with some of the best control schemes you’ll find on the system, and you get Riz-Zoawd (the original title of this game).
Despite being slightly simplistic for an RPG (no cheap deaths here, thank you), the combat system is very intuitive and
ingenious, letting you queue up attacks with something called the “ratio system.” See, each character takes up a certain number of “ratio points”; you can have a max of four ratio points in an attack. For example: if you wanted to attack with the Tin Man (who takes up three points), you would only be left with one ratio point, which means you’d have to either attack with Dorothy or the Scarecrow. Mercifully, it’s usually pretty obvious how you’re supposed to organize
due to each character being effective against enemies of a certain element.
Okay, enough about that; everything about this game is pretty much exact. Graphics are fantastic (for the DS), music is incredible, and the tale (pretty much a complete reimagining of Oz) is entertaining and compelling. A special note should be made about the touch screen-only interface, which works better than one might presume. Controlling the incredibly cute Dorothy with a virtual trackball (reflect “Centipede” trackball) shouldn’t work, but the geniuses at Media Vision (who made
the brilliant “Dragon Ball: Revenge of King Piccolo”) made it feel natural.
All-in-all, this game is one the best, not to mention least perplexing, RPGs one can find on the DS. Very rarely does a game come by the side of that I say everybody should play, but this is one of them. If you own a DS, you owe it to yourself to give this a shot.

Bought this for my 6 yo for Christmas by the side of with her first DS. It’s by far her favorite game to play. Simple enough for her to master quickly and keeps her interest for long term play. It got misplaced in our house for a week, and she didn’t want to play her other sports meeting! She is turning 7 this month and is plotting an Oz birthday party!

I like XSeed as a developer, as they take risks and produce gems like Retro Game Challenge and Small King’s Tale. This game is no exception. A turn-based role-playing game (RPG), you start as Dorothy and are soon joined by the Tin Man, Scarecrow, and the Lion. You explore different levels and different curiously themed enemies, collecting armor and weapons for the different characters.
This game is excellent for beginners and RPG veterans alike. It starts off a wee bit slow, but picks up honestly quickly. The maps can be hard to navigate and somewhat tiresome the first time owing to. As you level up the enemies get simpler and you can grind owing to grown-up levels to pick up extra cash and then buy better items.
By and large, this is an overlooked gem that is well worth a playthrough.
