Based on the “Witcher Saga” of books and small tales by buff up author Andrzej Sapkowski and built utilizing the powerful Neverwinter Nights engine, The Witcher immerses players in a perfectly plain, but harsh fantasy world in the role of a Geralt, an adept and feared monster-slayer-for-hire. Cruelly trained from birth to be a cold-hearted assassin whose services are available to the highest bidder, yet troubled by a past he can’t entirely remember, Geralt is a classic anti-hero. To this most renowned of witchers, a society of mutants born with superhuman strength and reflexes and trained at a high level in magic and alchemy, killing has been and seemingly should remain a strictly commercial affair, but as questions about his past come to the fore, so do doubts surrounding the morality of his trade. And these doubts only grow when bits of his past are revealed as he and you grow in potential and acclaim owing to the progression of the game.
The Thin Line Between Excellent and EvilFar from a common black and white treatment of excellent and evil, the moral attitudes defining the world of The Witcher are as close to that of our own prevalent real world view as you are likely to see in a modern RPG. Set in a time dominated by vanity, greed and prejudice, there is no lack of work for Geralt as the kingdoms of the North forsake ancient alliances and give in to endless intrigue and purges instead of facing a growing tide of evil. But as despicable as the monsters, non-human enemies and pure human trash you are hired to eliminate may seem and may very well be, pity, mercy and excellent faith are nearly always a possible option to deadly force and one that can change Geralt’s by and large fate. It’s this kernel of reality in a universe colonized with fantastic and sometimes frightening beings and creatures against a surroundings of morally challenging scenarios that will keep players coming back for more as they explore the varying consequences of Geralt’s choices and the choices mandatory upon him. Character Development
A witcher’s fate is preordained at birth, but your goal is to determine Geralt’s specific path. Hidden within The Witcher are a startling 250 in-game skills and abilities that allow you to define and in many cases plot the evolution of Geralt’s character. Will he rely mainly on his skill with a blade? Develop into an arcane battle mage? Transform into a potent alchemist? Or meld all these skills into a more complicated, but potentially unbeatable combo of all three? Give some thought to your path, but know it will not always be an simple or thoughtful one. Filled with non-linear choice-making opportunities and consequences, expect to be mandatory into quick decisions, choices between the lesser of two evils and to invariably be stuck with the consequences of your employer’s small-sighted plans for your services. It’s these consequences that will determine your progression owing to the game’s storyline and lead to the availability of different skills and abilities. Stunning Real-time Combat
Possessing superior strength, alacrity and agility makes Geralt quick to draw his blade when conflict arises, but this birthright is not always the right skill to rely on and depending on the enemy, can prove disastrous. To survive in this world of varied threats you will need to place aside the button mashing common to other RPGs and utilize The Witcher’s complex yet intuitive combat- based fighting system. You will learn quickly to switch seamlessly between the game’s six combat styles, dozens of potions, complex alchemy and magic systems and weapons modification mode, using your mouse alone or mouse with keyboard, to add tactical depth to your combat experience. Once you have mastered these, you will also have time to appreciate the ground-breaking fluidity of the game’s 600 in-game combat animations, based on actual medieval sword-fighting techniques and performed by experts at Frankfurt’s renowned Metric Minds Studio. It’s only owing to a combined focus on Geralt’s physical and mental capabilities that you can hope to survive the viciously violent world he inhabits and unlock both his right potential as a warrior as well as the secrets hidden in his past. I in fact give it 3-4 stars by and large. I can’t change the stars in edit mode.
I bought this based off the reviews on Amazon. The reviews seem to be fluffed up and I don’t know why.
At first, it defaulted to a diablo/neverwinter stylishness point-and-click to go and attack stylishness game. This is why I originally wrote a terrible review. I found that this game has 3 view modes that you can use to play. Far away, mid-range and over the shoulder. (there are technical names but lets keep it unadorned) I highly recommend OTS mode. It’s practically firstperson and there’s far less lag and buggy movement. You’ll still have some frustration with having to run exactly owing to the door or you sort of collide with the door frame or going up steps should be way smoother but it slows you down if you come near an edge. Even though you can’t fall, it stops your character like you got caught on something or walked into a phantom wall.
In OTS mode, I hoped for better hair on our hero but it’s a small too stiff for my taste. Although the detail in your characters gear and weapons are pretty excellent, it’s obvious they had to make cuts somewhere.
Combat – not that terrible. You have chain attacks that allow you honest time to click when your sword icon is on fire. It doesn’t flash on and off so quick that you can’t possibly make a chain like the arrows in Jericho or the quick keys in RE4. If you click at the right time, you chain your attacks for more hurt. You are mandatory to evade and time your strikes because if the enemy strikes first, it stops your attack. It makes you plot your attack and this is excellent.
Minigames are pretty unadorned. Not too elaborate and quick. Dice, drinking sports meeting and one more that slips my mind.
The voice acting is bland but not enough to lower my score. There isn’t much emotion in the characters voices. (please learn from NOLF and NOLF2) ha
Magic is a unadorned right click and hotkeyed to your 1-5 keys. I liked that as well. hotpick a magic and fry one guy then change to force/wind and knock another off his feet. And there are final strikes too if you time it right to include decapitation. Bonus points!
Items can be stacked such as potions that are shown on your crest in the top left of the screen so if a potion wears off, you can tell. Food seemed pointless since it only allowed you to gain a sliver of shape.
I’m not sure if it’s worth $50 but maybe $40.

I have been a huge fan of all the best and most well loved sports meeting such as Half-Life2, BF2, Halo, MOH, COD4, and most importantly….Nothingness. I played all expansions of Nothingness to the fullest. Many other PC sports meeting I have played I cannot recollect at this moment. I was very intrigued about the upcoming Witcher for at least a year. I also waited until the price was normal before I tried it. The result was disapointing. I spent two hours trying to figure out the combat. Did you know the main character can never take his sword out except in combat? Did you know that when he is in combat he ALWAYS has his sword positioned over his head? You cannot click, hit and dodge…oh no..you have to wait for the EXACT time to left OR right click. yup. no messin around. You can only attack the guy with the small red ring around him. the enemy behind you can keep busting you until he has the small red ring. You also have to push a button to change your tactics depending on if your attacker has armor or not. My arm was sore after two hours of right and left clicking as quick as I could.
Compare to Nothingness? You know it…and this is a dismal failure. I predict the price TANKS by mid-summer or earlier.
wait until its 10 bucks in a few months before you buy it.

I’m a long-time RPG player.
Gothic 1 & 2 were my favorite sports meeting until now.
The Witcher is the most open RPG I’ve ever played.
Every choice, every choice you make affects the game.
I never thought there would be a game this fantastic, this all-consuming.
Everything about this game was well done by ther developers.
The people that did Gothic 3 should have done this well, for that game (Gothic 3) was a total dissipate of cash.
I didn’t like Nothingness at all. It’s way too repetitive. Seems like you’re doing the same tired ancient crap over & over.
The Witcher is different, very different.
The tale, the battles, this game sucks you into a wonderful fantastic world and keeps you there.
I’ve already finished this game and am currently playing it a 2nd time.
This game will remain at the top of my favorites list until they come out with “The Witcher II”.
Yes, this is truly the best RPG ever.

Has some merits but pales in comparison to MorrowindOblivion, Dungeon Siege, Lion Heart, etc. Its obvious the creators have opted for glitz over substance. My suggestion? Save your $55.00 + replay Diablo. Far more fun and satisfying without the obvious performance and technical issues. When the 1.2 patch for this game is about 115 mb’s its obvious there are some honest technical flaws.

Maybe it is just that Nothingness set the standard so high for RPG sports meeting but I am disappointed with this game. Graphics are only average, the game is pretty linear, combat not that fun, and much to my disappointment I just could not get into it. Maybe you will have a different experience but I would be cautious about spending over fifty bucks for this game like I did.
