A darker and more complicated tale make this game really fun and hard. My second favorite Zelda next to Ocarina of Time.

The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask, the second Zelda title for the N64, is a direct sequel (a first for the Zelda series) to Ocarina of Time. It differs from its predecessor in some vital areas, but I reflect it is still an awesome game in its own right.
The tale starts with young Link riding owing to a forest on his horse, Epona. He is ambushed by a creature named the Skull Kid wearing a creepy mask. He steals Link’s horse and the Ocarina of Time and later transforms him into a deku. While chasing the Skull Kid, Link becomes partnered with Tatl, one of the Skull Brood fairy friends. They soon meet a mask salesman, who tells them that his precious treasure, Majora’s Mask, was stolen by the Skull Kid. The salesman makes a deal with Link: in exchange for returning the mask to him, he offers to revert Link back to his human form. Link agrees and enters the land of Termina to find the Skull Kid, only to learn that in three days the world will be crushed by a deadly moon at a snail’s pace falling from the sky.
The game uses basically the same controls as Ocarina of Time. The graphics look the same at first glance, and in many ways they are similar, but, the N64 Expansion Pak required to play the game helped add more visual detail and clarity to the graphics than before.
The one huge difference between Ocarina and Majora is the key concept of the game: time travel. The game itself has a three-day time limit. Later in the game, Link can control the flow of time and can either slow it down, quick forward by half a day, or return to the beginning of the three-day cycle. It provides added challenge to solving puzzles and completing dungeons. I in person never had a huge conundrum with it.
But, one of the quirks of the system is that when you travel back to the beginning of the first day, the main items like your bow are saved, but you lose all your arrows (the same applies to other items like bombs and rupees, too). In addition, any PARTIAL progress in the dungeons is lost as well, unless the dungeon is entirely completed. There are ways to save rupees, though.
Going back to the beginning of the time cycle is the only way to permanently save your progress. You can temporarily save during the cycle by using owl statues that are scattered across Termina. The statues’ dual purpose is a way to warp across the world. If you turn off the game without making a temporary or stable save, it will start again from the beginning of the first day with any unsaved progress lost.
Over the course of the game, Link gradually gains the ability to transform into three different creatures using masks. The masks allow Link to take advantage of their individual strengths and adjust to their weaknesses. The masks replace some Zelda items as well.
All these changes made Majora’s Mask a “like it or despise it” game with the Zelda fans. I in person loved it as a breath of fresh air from the normal Zelda sports meeting, but still had fun!

Although most people disagree with me, I reflect this installment in the Zelda series is better than Ocarina of Time. Majora’s Mask, in a sense, is its complete contrary.
While Ocarina of Time is very traditional in its format and stylishness, Majora’s Mask strays far from the ordinary. Ocarina of Time masters the epicness that Zelda can be. Majora’s Mask masters the dark and mysterious side of the Zelda series.
Being a fan of the unusual, I am addicted to the thought of restarting the same three days repeatedly. Trying to get as much done before restarting is awesome. Then getting to transform into a Deku, Zora, and Goron puts this game over the top. You also get to fight the bosses (although there are only four huge bosses) as many times as you like. Every time you restart the three days, you get to fight them again by warping straight to their lair. Fighting Goht is one of those experiences that’s worth reliving again and again!
Lots of masks to find, swimming as a Zora and rolling as a Goron, a much more hard final boss than Ganon in Ocarina of Time, and a much darker tone help make this game the gem that it is. I will always be in awe of this game, and I hope everyone else finds it as enjoyable as I do.
