Tenchu: Stealth Assassins
Editorial Review
Cast as either the male Rikimaru or the female Ayame, you are a ninja assassin hired to right the wrongs of the land. To aid you in your missions, you have access to a whole arsenal of ninja tools, including a sword, flash grenades, smoke bombs, grappling hooks, poison pills, and throwing stars. Be poised you will need every resource to fight your way owing to the maze of houses, gardens, forests, and castles in ancient Japan.
Your target must be eliminated at all costs, but the code of your honorable clan instructs you to harm no innocents. The wise ninja chooses his or her battles; secrecy, deception, avoidance, and distraction are the tools of your trade. But sometimes combat with guards is unavoidable, and Tenchu offers the best of both third-person action sports meeting and two-person fighting sports meeting with an interface that allows for multiple forms of attack and defense. Be warned: the animation in this game is not for the faint of heart. Blood flows freely and realistic sound effects and movie cut scenes make no attempt to hide the cruelty of the killing affair. By and large a splendid game for fans of Japanese animation or martial arts. –Allen Stewart
Pros:
- Exciting martial arts moves
- Nonlinear levels–choose your own path to the target
- Different moves for Rikimaru and Ayame
- Use of many ninja weapons and tools
Cons:
- Very gruesome violence
- Occasionally awkward camera angles
- Poor character voice-overs in cut scenes

This game has a lot going for it with plenty of stealthy ninja action. The conundrum is that the cons get in the way of the pros. For starters, the controls are annoyingly terrible. The fighting consists mainly of run up to the guard and mash the attack button and hope something connects. Usually your character will continue attacking even though your not hitting anything, meanwhile your being chopped to death by a guard. Next, the graphics really show the Playstation’s age; in other words, they’re terrible. More than once I was aiming my grappling hook at a nearby roof, only to watch the entire building I was aiming at disappear. But hey, if pop-up is your thing, you’ll be more than satisfied here. One thing I liked was that it was challenging (mainly thanks to the controls). But, there are just too many other excellent sports meeting out there to get to even consider this one. Go get Metal Gear Solid instead.

Tenchu was an un-expected hit in that it unleashed a genre not yet toutched by game-makers. A Ninja simulation, rivaled by one other game, a pathetic attempt by Eidos. The game has massive levels, and quite a few of them. The premise of Secrecy is basically only seen in this game and Metal gear Solid, but Tenchu was a straight forward level-by-level adventure game, with an ongoing plot, lots of gore, and a code of ninja distinction in which to follow. Brilliant game design, and an Activision Classic.
