Arcadia is a magical world in which folks float owing to the air on giant airships. A young and lively air pirate, named Vyse–who leads the swashbuckling Blue Rogue pirates–spends most of his time traveling from floating island to floating island. While touching down on the Valuan Empire one fateful day, Vyse and his sidekick Aika rescue a mysterious girl, named Fina, who was captured while trying to find six magic crystals that are used to summon Gigas–powerful ancient weapons. Naturally, the Valuans want the Gigas for their own mean political plans; Vyse, Aika, and Fina, then, set out to find the precious, scattered crystals and fight enemies (both human and nonhuman) to keep the world safe from tyranny.

Graphically, Skies of Arcadia is bizarre and stunning. In total, there are six huge lands to explore, with many different kinds of environments–such as villages, dungeons, forests, and deserts, as well as otherworldly locations.

The turn-based combat system is effective, with more than 70 customizable weapons to use (based on different colors) and more than three-dozen magic spells (and special attacks), as indicated by the game’s “spirit bar,” shown on the screen. The visuals during the fight scenes might cause your jaw to fall to the ground, with its bright lights and mesmerizing colors and textures.

Skies of Arcadia is a highly addictive, gorgeous, huge, and deep RPG, and worthy of your attention. Kudos to Sega for making a breathtaking fantasy that likely will be a mainstay in Dreamcasts, well into the spring. –Todd Mowatt

Pros:

  • Awesome graphics
  • Solid tale
  • Lots of customization

Cons:

  • Random battles can become tiring

Ace Combat 4: Shattered Skies

Ace Combat 4: Shattered Skies

  • Soar owing to the blue in 24 missions, piloting the fastest & most powerful aircraft in the world
  • Incredibly detailed aircraft are modeled from real jet fighters in 3D
  • A rich and engaging storyline will impress you — it unfolds as you glide in deadly combat missions
  • Realistic alacrity effects will practically make you feel teh G-forces crushing your chest
  • Real weather effects will affect your flight abilities — will you be thrown off by cloud cover or glare for the sun?

Product Description
Ace Combat 04: Shattered Skies is as close as console owners can come to owning a PC-class simulator. It still has the arcade sensibilities of previous entries in this well loved series, but the graphics, number of planes (all with different flight characteristics), and tale line kick this dogfighting experience into full afterburner.

Things don’t start out too well. Early in the game you’re saddled with what amounts to a flying brick, and are mandatory to glide a few dull mud-moving missions. Stick with it, though. By the end of the game, you’ll have earned enough cash to buy a hangar full of incredible aircraft, each with special weapons, capabilities, and shortcomings. The F-14, for example, has a slow roll rate but can engage multiple targets at long range. The A-10 is horrible in a dogfight, but is devastating down low. You’ll need to familiarize yourself with all the planes, as picking the right plane for the job always spells the difference between success and failure in the later missions.

The game is nearly exact in the audio department, with flourishing engine noises (taken from recordings of the planes’ real-life counterparts) and constant radio prattle during missions. Graphically, it’s a bit of a letdown, especially the anemic explosions. Up high, everything is picture exact, and the plane models are gorgeous, but close to the ground the terrain melts into a pixilated mess. This is offset somewhat by the inclusion of dense urban areas and twisting canyons that are thrilling to glide owing to. All things considered, Shattered Skies is the best mix of simulation and arcade action ever burned onto a disc. –T. Byrl Baker

Pros:

  • Photorealistic terrain (at least when viewed from high altitude)
  • Nonstop action backed by an engaging tale
  • Intense dogfights, sometimes invoAmazon.com Review
