Dumb tale. Terrible gameplay. Dreadful controls. Excellent graphics. Tries way too hard to rip off the Dead to Rights series. John Woo needs to stick to what he does best… hard boiled action flicks. Leave video sports meeting to the professionals. Stranglehold would have made a better movie. I would not touch this game again with a ten foot pole. Everytime I see this game for such a cheap price in stores I want to reach for it, but turn and walk away because I remember how terrible it is. What a bring shame on a next-gen game turned out to be such a dissipate. I remember seeing screen shots for it a long time ago and thought it looked game. Bolt from the blue! It looks better on paper, and plays just as excellent too.

bought this game on the back of being a huge John Woo/Chow Yun Stout fan. It seemed really excellent at first, although the graphics on the cut scenes are a bit bone idle in terms of details. Diving around and using precision bullets is fun for a while but it soon gets tedious. The whole gameplay becomes shooting infinite amounts of rather dull AI baddies who just appear from nowhere after you walk over a partucular point. The terrible guys don’t go much, they just stand and shoot and there are far too many of them. This is OK if you are watching a John Woo film but is rather dull if you have to kill armies of drones just to progress to the next stage where you encounter the same again.
I tried the online part but cound not find any game rooms after trying several times over a few days so I can’t say if the online gameplay is any better.
3 stars are for the early depression but general gameplay is disappointing.

Many reviewers have already covered Stranglehold’s features and gameplay extensively, so I’m just going to talk about a few things I’ve noticed as a long-time fan of FPS sports meeting and of John Woo.
*First-generation graphics: Stranglehold is showing its age. The graphics are visibly from the first generation of sports meeting produced for contemporary game consoles. It’s not too distracting, but don’t start playing if you’ve just finished a graphics powerhouse title like Metal Gear Solid 4 or New 2.
*Repetitious and clichéd gameplay: anyone who has ever played Doom, Quake, Half-Life, Black, Max Payne, or any other shooter knows the drill. Run around, collect guns, shoot at anything that moves, and pick up shape packs before you die. No surprises here…either you like this sort of thing or you despise it.
*Classic John Woo stylishness: if you dig Woo’s ultraviolent, over-the-top Hong Kong action flicks, especially Hard Boiled, you’ll delight in all the Woo touches in Stranglehold. From awesome tracking shots in cut scenes to acrobatic character moves, Stranglehold is the bordering you’re ever gonna get to being Chow Yun Stout yourself.
So, which is it going to be? As a review novelist, I have a duty to ding Stranglehold for its so-so graphics, lame storyline, and repetitive gameplay. As a committed fan and friend of John Woo’s cinematic oeuvre, I ought to give Stranglehold a 5-star review. Hmmmm, well…unlike a typical John Woo main character, I don’t feel I can let friendship outweigh my duty to warn potential victims of this game by giving it a exact rating.
Bottom line: 3 stars, with the caveat that fans of Woo’s HK work are much more likely to delight in Stranglehold than those who are unfamiliar with films like The Killer, A Better Tomorrow, and Bullet in the Head.
