Soul Calibur
Editorial Review
Featuring graphics that surpass even the incredible NFL 2K, Soul Calibur is the martial arts fighting game to end all fighting sports meeting and the game to get if you’re a Dreamcast owner. Based on the arcade classic of the same name, Soul Calibur lets you choose to represent one of 10 fighters in a series of battles against your peers. If you can successfully defeat all of your opponents, you will then face the fiendish Inferno in a final confrontation that will determine the fate of the world. Each of the game’s warriors is armed with a different deadly weapon–sword, ax, stave, nunchaku, you name it–and an assortment of special moves all tailored to that specific weapon. The warriors include men, women, and creatures from all over the globe and from various mythologies. Each is brought to life with incredible motion-capture animation, which results in incredibly lifelike and realistic duels. If you own a Dreamcast or are thinking of buying one, do yourself a favor and add Soul Calibur to your pool. –Mike Ryan
Pros:
- Exceptionally lifelike graphics and animation
- Multiple game modes–1-player, 2-player, team, computer vs. computer, martial arts demo, and more
- Secrets and extra features will keep players coming back
Cons:
- May be too violent for some parents

This is an ok game. The graphics are probably the why you see two stars on my rating. Other than that, it’s just a regular ancient fighting game. To me, the game got dull after about 30 minutes. And mainly all you use with a character is the same for or five moves. I mean, how many of you out there will spend your whole weekend trying to master all the moves on one charcater and do them well? Exactly(and if you do, that’s pretty sad.) Like I said, for each character your only really going to be pulling of 4 or 5 moves, and that gets dull. And you can’t relly punch in this game because you have something like a 10 foot ax in your hands trying to swing it around. Now, if you want to know some excellent fighting sports meeting, then I highly insist that you try Tekken tag, for PS2. I mean, with over 30 chaacters to start off with, different modes, what more can you question for? Soul Calibur I reflect doesn’t really give the character your controlling much mobility, just the contrary of Tekken Tag. Another splendid fighting game is the Powerstone series, try either one of them, because they are both crazy heart-pounding action. If you really want this game, then go ahead and buy it. But for all of you who haven’t played it, rent it first.

This game stinks – it’s way too simple to beat, there aren’t enough characters, enemies are mindless, stages are way too small, and the only thing excellent about it is the graphics. This is not anything compared to Ready 2 Rumble. I despise this game!

Soul Calibur is a classic example of all icing and no cake! The game looks splendid and sounds splendid, but its too simple. The game that is supposed to be the game for “die hard fighting fans” is basically a walk in the park. The game is a button masher! I played the game and found that “turtling up” and waiting for the right time to attack or throw is all that it takes to succeed and it even works on the higher dificulty settings.
My major gripe about the game is the dark and demonic tale shape. No God fearing person should touch this “demon sword wielding” game (I started to learn the different plots after I played it). I’m not trying to sound like a fanatic but come on why all the demon intense plots in a generally evil game. What sick minds came up with this anyway?
If the game had a better plot (one that involved some thought) then it would be a classic, but as it stands…no.

Sure at first glance this game looks nice, and if you own it, it can be enjoyable, but what about your friends who have no thought how to operate the “8-way run system” or how to “guard impact.” I end up spending more time explaining to my friends how to play it than I do in fact playing it. With Ready 2 Rumble, I tell my friends there are four punch buttons and two block buttons. That’s all. Unless your friends are as into Soul Calibur as you are, buy Ready 2 Rumble.

I can’t know why people like “Soul Calibur” so much. Yeah, it has nice graphics, but eye-sweetie can’t save a game that is simply NOT FUN TO PLAY! There is no fighting approach, no combos, no special attacks, no jumping, no not anything. You just have to press the same attack button on the right time again and again and again to win any fight. Of course, it gets very dull in a few minutes.
If you reflect gameplay is more vital than graphics, get “King of Fighters” (either “KOF Dream Match” or “KOF Evolution”) or “Fatal Fury – Mark of the Wolves” instead.
