This review is about as long as the game. My 10 year ancient spent $40 of his hard-earned cash on this game and was disappointed that he had conquered it in 90 minutes. I’m sure he had some fun playing it, but even he thinks it was not worth the cash.

Just five months after the schizophrenic Sonic Unleashed was released, the Sonic Team sweatshop has cranked out another game, Sonic and the Black Knight. But, what was promised to be the improved, refined sequel to Sonic and the Secret Rings has turned out to be anything but. Right now I’d take Secret Rings over any level in this game.
If Sonic Team had just taken the basic elements of Secret Rings and perfected them – better control and camera angles, less tedious missions, a more reasonable learning curve – they would have had a fantastic sequel that may have been the best return to form for Sonic that we’ve seen in nearly a decade. But, the team has never seen a new gimmick that they didn’t like so now we have Sonic the swashbuckler. It could have been excellent if Sonic’s alacrity had been maintained and if the Wii-remote waggle had been more precise. But when you have to literally stop every few seconds, flick your wrist around like an idiot to swing your sword, and then jerk back into full motion again repeatedly, in EVERY SINGLE LEVEL, there is no chance to get a excellent momentum going, and the whole experience just becomes tedious. No amount of excellent graphics – and this game does have very nicely done graphics – is going to save a game if its gameplay mechanics are inherently flawed. Just like every 3-D Sonic game ever made, the camera has some major problems with jerkiness, getting stuck behind objects, or just plain not allowing you to see what’s up ahead. Side missions like stopping to give coins to townspeople, in which you have to brake completely just so you can do some quick-time button movements, are horrible. The music is decent, a bizarre combo of 80’s “Sonic rock” with medieval motifs. The voice acting and terrible dialogue is what we have come to expect from Sonic. And for the unbelievably slow, dull multiplayer game, well, the less that is said about that the better.
There have already been complaints by some Sonic fans for the seemingly excessive low scores some major game reviewing websites have given this game. I reflect they, like many fans of the original Genesis Sonic sports meeting, are just frustrated. It’s like Sonic Team and SEGA can’t, or won’t, listen to the gaming community. I know that Sonic is a cash cow (or hog, I guess) for SEGA and they want to place him in as many sports meeting as possible, whether or not those sports meeting are suitable for market. Don’t they know that if they took their time to make an brilliant Sonic game that truly does reflect what made the franchise splendid in the 90s – the ecxiting and SIMPLE blend of alacrity and platforming – that they would be raking in ten times the amount of cash they are now? Nintendo only makes a proper Mario game once every five years or so because they want to get it RIGHT. It’s what keeps the franchise going. SEGA and Sonic Team could take a lesson from this, and if they don’t want to see their mascot fade away like a washed-up rock star, they better do it quick.

They have made vast improvements over the Sonic and the Secret Rings game, and the sword is a pretty clean addition

This game is awesome. You use a sword, which is in fact fun. The Blacksmith can make new swords, and you can have sword fights in multiplayer. Plus, after you beat the King, you can use Gawain(Knuckles), Lancelot(Shadow), and
Percival(Blaze) on certain levels. There are lots of side missions, and you can get people to follow you(wave at you when you play) by doing well and giving poor people rings. But, the main tale is simple(about 5 hours for me) but getting all the bonus and multiplayer characters will take a while. Awesome game!

Sadly this is a very half-hearted sequel to Secret Rings which sacrifices all of that game’s alacrity for a gimmicky sword mechanic. The game’s slow, the combat’s shallow, the bosses are either extremely simple or controller-throwing-frustrating. Visuals are nice but otherwise there’s nearly not anything noteworthy here. Not to mention you can beat it in under 3 hours.
For a excellent recent Sonic game check out Sonic Unleashed or Sonic and the Secret Rings.Sadly Black Knight deserves to be forgotten by the side of with duds like Shadow the Hedgehog, and Sonic the Hedgehog (2006).
