The Tale In the year 2075, the Earth Defense Force (EDF) received a distress indicate from a small mining facility on the surface of Mars. A group of rebels calling themselves the Red Faction had overthrown the ruthless Ultor Corporation after years of oppression. The EDF responded by launching a fleet of warships to Mars to aid the miners, bring Ultor to justice and restore order to the Martian colonies. In order to ensure safety and security for the newly liberated colonists, the EDF set up command posts and bases across the planet. Initially, under the EDF’s rule, the people of Mars prospered: colonists established homesteads, built towns and independent mining operations and started to stake and work their mining claims. But the more things change on Mars, the more they stay the same.
The troubles started with colonists being driven from their homes and mining claims by greedy, Earth-based corporations. Then came a 50 year turn of events that saw the EDF adopting the heavy-handed tactics that it once stood against. Yet in doing so it also instilled a deep-seated resentment among the miners and settlers of the Martian colonies. One of these new Martians is miner Alec Mason, whose dream of a new life carved out of the course Martian soil was crushed in the face of EDF-ordered curfews, detention centers, beatings, mass arrests and personal tragedy. But as powerful as the EDF is, there is resistance. Mason and a small group of revolutionaries have banded together, taken up the Red Faction name and pledged to again bring about a free Mars. And though their enemy has changed, their battle weep ruins unchanged: “Better Red than Dead.”

Guerilla Warfare You don’t stand a chance against the EDF using standard military tactics. The only recourse when the few stand against the many is the use of hit and run tactics. Learn the routes of the patrols and quickest ways in and out of EDF strongholds. By studying these things you can instinctively know when to attack, and when to wait for a better opportunity.
Ambushes are also useful in thinning EDF ranks. Remote charges and proximity mines are your best friend when preparing an ambush. A few well-positioned charges on the structural supports of a bridge can do wonders for stopping a convoy dead in its tracks. Above all else, remember this: guerilla tactics are not about fighting honest, they are about winning. |
Okay Ive played both Prototype and Red Faction so my review will be slightly skewered. First off I want to say I bought and played Prototype first. Then I read a bunch of reviews about Red Faction (mostly on this site) that say “Red Faction Red Faction” so like a doofus I bought it. (this is where the “I played Prototype first comes in”)
Prototype dominates. Compared to Prototype, Red Faction felt slow, sluggish, and semi-retarded. The driving controls were alot harder (not user-friendly), targeting slower. I know these are two completely different sports meeting but in certain aspects they are alike. For instance, hit-and-run techniques are used in both. Where Prototype you can penetrate a fray, ruin w/e it is you need to ruin and then get out, in Red Faction you face endless amounts of EDF that keep on coming. The Guerillas that help you have downs syndrome (ie get in your way or shoot you in the back) and you can only hold 120 rounds of your regular auto rifle (starting off). The only way to escape once you go red status in Red Faction is to die it seems. Rarely did I make it to a vehicle to escape to a safehouse. Also you should be able to “jack” vehicles, for example when those EDF are driving and stop for a second you should be able to open their door and throw them out. The game should progress where if they are going to send 20 – 30+ EDF Soldiers to your location, its later in the game, not when I can only afford level one armor. Oh and driving a vehicle was awkward, aiming a weapon and switching weapons, though unadorned should have followed a Modern Duty stylishness, just awkward (maybe that is my fault not used to it)
By the way in no shape or form am I endorsing Prototype, Im just comparing it. Also, I will admit this is my first Red Faction type game and it just seems…ugh. Maybe I need to give it more time but when I have to stop a convoy and I cant “jack” a vehicle and can’t ruin enough of them because Im getting shot or run over by the endless EDF, it gets tiresome. Maybe this game aint for me
I despise the fact that I bought Red Faction, Although what made my vision skewered was Prototype was played first, was quicker, sleeker, and way more user-friendly game. Play Prototype then play Red Faction. Hell just watch Prototypes intro and when you question your self “whoa wait…I can do all that?” Yes you can

This review is going to be unpopular, but it’s what I honestly reflect. I selected up RFG the day it came out, I threw it in and here are the impressions I got:
Pro:
Fascinating concept/storyline, caught me attention right off the bat.
Decent graphics, not anything groundbreaking. Physics/graphics seem well matched to the havoc engine.
Controls seems somewhat intuitive, and the learning curve is small.
Con:
The first thing I took issue with is the unrealistic thought of a guy running around Mars knocking down buildings with of all things a sledgehammer? I realize you don’t have to necessarily use this method after the first few levels and the thought is that he’s a miner, but it’s still kind of asinine and just doesn’t ‘fit’ well.
Game play gets repetitive really quickly. It’s the same 5 or 6 missions recycled ad nauseum. I had to set the controller down after about 3 hours because of this. It held me for a small time, but I soon found myself just driving around blowing stuff up, but even that gets ancient as there’s only so much you can do.
Combat is frustrating and tiring and poorly conceptualized.
It seems like a sophomoric attempt at Grand Theft Auto: Mars. This game might have been earth-shattering 5 or 6 years ago, but it just kind of limps in right now. I boxed it up and sold it off at about $10 less than what I bought it for. I’d recommend you rent before you buy this turd.

Maybe my hopes were WAY too high when I got this… I LOVED the ancient ones, and I like Saints Row, so I figured it’d be excellent… I mean I played the demo for it like 90 times and loved it more and more each time… the actual game though, was EXTREMELY dull and tedious. Like when you die and have to go to a safehouse 20 freaking miles away! I was also kind of hoping for huge destructible citys on Mars too. I was hoping for skyscrapers and maybe some planes. I’m not evil, but that’d just be incredible… can you presume… flying a plane towards a building… parachute out and watch the destruction ensue….
In the end, it just seems like a glorified tech demo for the geo-mod 2… which I was thinking that, then saw a review saying the same exact thing.
I’m hoping maybe They’ll place the geo-mod 2 engine in Saints Row 3, then you’ll have a F-ING GAME!

I in fact loved this game for the first couple territories/hours. I would even say I loved the demo on xbox live! After that, but, the game gets so repetitive it’s rediculous. Go ruin this building. Blow this up. Take out that truck. Ugh, I couldn’t take it anymore and it got really dull so I took it back. If all you want to do is ruin buildings, use some fascinating weapons, and guide some admittedly cool vehicles then you may delight in this game. I just expected more depth.

I rented this game a few days ago and have been playing it on and off since then. I was expecting more depth from this game and a better tale that would possibly matter in the game. The graphics are incredible, and driving around what appears to be a genuine Martian landscape is cool. But, once you get over the early awesomeness of the graphics, I found myself underwhelmed. The missions are repetitive, the storyline doesn’t seem to matter much, and your supposed allies in the game are completely useless. I have found myself bored with the game already. It is a bring shame on since it seems another month or two of fleshing out the tale and putting in some fascinating missions would have made a huge difference……..Oh, well glad it was a rental.
