Action RPGEditorial Review
Parasite Eve tells the tale of Aya Brea of the NYPD on a case involving mass spontaneous human combustion, mutating animals, and the mitochondria revolution. Sound fun? Perplexing? Parasite Eve is both.
It starts when Aya is attending an opera at Carnegie Hall. The soloist bursts into song and the consultation bursts into flames. Somehow, Aya is the only attendee who isn’t affected. Not surprisingly, she wants to know what’s going on. This curiosity, coupled with her duties as a police officer, grows into a full-scale investigation.
Parasite Eve’s mechanics are unadorned, yet elegant. From combat to level advancement, the game runs easily and smoothly, making it ideal for someone new to role-playing sports meeting (RPGs). Experienced RPGers should still delight in it for its brilliant storyline.
Technically speaking, the game’s graphics and sound are excellent, but not spectacular. The full-motion cutscenes are superbly done. Parasite Eve is a excellent game–there’s just not enough of it. While it doesn’t feel crammed together, the tale seems to resolve quickly. Brilliant while it lasted, Parasite Eve left me wanting more. –John Cocking
Pros:
- Mutating dogs
- Involving storyline
- Elegant game mechanics
Cons:

Not that believability should be integral to the success of a game, but all too often, I found myself shouting “that’s a lie!” or “that violates laws of physics!” while playing this game. What annoyed me, I guess, is that the game tries to present a fictional tale as though it really could happen in today’s world, dreaming up all sorts of metaphysics to support itself. (Intelligent atoms? Please!)
Despite a somewhat ludicrous plot, the game is fun to play, if you like laborious action or are easily entertained. The fight engine is well-designed, yet hard to get acquainted with, menus are unintuitive (don’t click the incorrect button, or your gun vanishes forever!) and the protagonist runs like a pack mule on NyQuill. This, plus the fact that areas are vast, makes for a slow-paced game, wherein you can spend an hour merely trying to get your character to her next destination.
So if you’re looking for a game that combines the plot of Resident Evil with the fight engine from Secret of Mana, and throws in (then magnifies) the flaws from both sports meeting, this is a must have. Otherwise, spend your cash on something else. (Like a bike, a tennis racket, a pair of skis, a book, etc.)
