Since I bought the DS four months ago, I have gone owing to two of these AC adapters. The quality of the wire is absolutely wretched. You have to treat it like glass. I say this coming from the perspective of effective and traveling with all kinds of wire adapters and chargers. Never have I had this conundrum with any other kind of electrical wire or cord. I haven’t done anything to these wires but pack, transport, and unpack them, and somehow the insulator and the internal wires in the cord get ripped open. Nintendo ought to be ashamed for churning out such poor design. They need to make a better, more rugged adapter. Unfortunately I have not seen any alternative out there.
EDIT:
I have since found two third party chargers for the DS: one USB Nintendo DS Lite USB In Car Adapter and one a much more significant AC adaptor Nintendo DS Lite Universal Home Potential. I haven’t had a release conundrum with either of them in the last year and a half. They are of fantastic quality.
Don’t buy Nintendo’s brand as a replacement. Go for the heavy duty Nintendo DS Lite Universal Home Potential instead.

Sorry but I had to return it because the Nintendo DS came with a potential supply and we didn’t need another one.

Unadorned enough, it stops that ancient DS Lite from gathering dust by making it usable. NO MORE EXPENSIVE PAPER WEIGHTS!

I assumed this would work with the regular DS, which my kid has. I mean, how ridiculous would Nintendo have to be to have a different potential supply for ever bonehead device they come up with.
Well, guess what… Yip… The small blue sticker on the box in the picture says DS Lite Only when you get it close enough to in fact read. I wish it had said that more visibly in the product description, but oh well.
For 10 bucks, it isn’t worth my time to return it. I thought it might fit into my kids ps3 controller to charge it, as they were both about 5v, but NOOO, Nintendo gizmo hell strikes again, the goofy small connector won’t fit that either… Grrrr. Into the junk drawer with all the other stuff I’ll never use again.
