NBA Street is the best arcade basketball title available. Cycle. Why? No refs, no clocks, no fouls. Players will knock you over, and they practically live for blatant goaltending throughout the game. Realistic? No, but it’s always fun–even if you despise basketball.
Street has two different game modes–City Circuit and Hold the Court–yet the differences here are minimal. Both feature three-on-three sports meeting of 21, in which you must assemble a squad composed of (initially) NBA players. Soon you’ll play against street legends (read: bosses) that, once defeated, can be added to your team. Your ultimate goal is to defeat the largest legend ever: Michael Jordan.
To survive the streets, you must learn which buttons to mash as you master specific stunts. This will add special points to your score and give you access to different ways to score. Though similar to NBA Jam and its sequels, Street is deeper, and sports a surprisingly developed finesse game.
Street does commit some fouls, though, with its over-the-top, repetitive commentary and lack of play modes. But, even if you despise arcade-stylishness basketball, you’ll find Street differs from the pack, making it a solid MVP contender.
Pros:
- Excellent controls and gameplay
- Pleasantly cartoonish graphics
- Arcade approach makes it fun for those turned off by very technical basketball simulations
Cons:
- Horrific commentary
- Only 2 very similar gameplay modes
- No 4-player support

Taking the ball out of the hands of shoe salesman and giving it to characters based on schoolyard greats, NBA Street also plays by street rules. Off-the-backboard passes, nasty dunks, and a special momentum meter–which boosts your abilities as you humiliate the competition–let you know you’re not playing arena ball. In fact, some of the courts are modeled after real-life basketball training grounds, such as New York’s Rucker Park and the Cage. You’ll see them all when you hit the road and take on the local crew. Go well against them and you’ll be able to recruit some special talent (did we say Mike?) to your team. Hold the Court mode will reward you with cool accessories, such as shoes and tattoos, by successfully defending the home court against challenging teams.

Let’s face facts, all the ea sports titles, outside Madden and SSX, on Playstation 2 have been miserable failures. NBA Live is no exception, but in an effort to save the development cash dumped into the scheme, EA seams to be trying to take the best part of NBA Live and make a whole game around it. The street game in NBA Live was fun, because it got you down to just 2 guys and no tough arenas full of fans to render. It was charming and the sound was not terrible. Most importantly though, you could play the game and not be embarrassed you wasted your cash on it. But facts are facts; this game is an attempt at an appeasement gift to we the consumer. With many new sports meeting right around the corner, EA needs hits on the PS2, not failures like they started with. Rumble Racing was cool, and lets hope Street is as well. Ea is a excellent company at the core, but we deserve better treatment then we have gotten so far on the PS2. Let’s hope this is a continuation in the right management, but don’t be surprised if it is a dismal failure if they can’t work around the Live engine. Get it at EB and see for yourself.

As the playoffs wind down on another dreadful NBA season, this game may be all that us B-Ball fans have to look forward to (especially if Kobe and the Lakers just thrash the Sixers like they should). Watching the NBA has become an implementation in futility, as most of the players in the league just don’t have what it takes to play team ball. So this game should cure us of all those painful experiences of watching hot-shot players going one on one for 48 minutes, driving to the rim, trying to score over three defenders, and missing layups. Bring on NBA Street, where if we are going to have to experience show off ball we may as well be in control. And this game has it. Ally-oops, between the legs stylishness points, cross-overs, in your face dunks. Forget an 82 game season, they’re not fun to watch anymore never-the-less play them. I want street court action, trash talkin’, take your ball home to mama cuz’ you just can’t hack it here ballin’. Then let’s hit the road cross country and take over some other poor sucka’s court. It’s all our house, baby, and when me and MJ come callin’, you better lock the kids inside and place those chastity belts on your ladies, cuz’ it’s gonna be sexy the way we take your pride. You gettin’ my drift? NBA Street is the real deal. I don’t care if you’re 5′1″ or 7′6″, this is the game that is gonna seperate the men from the ladies, and leave the rest of you playing NBA shootout on your broken down PS1.
