Ashan is a world of legendary peoples. Proud Elves guard the emerald forests of Irollan… Mighty Knights rule the fiefs of the Griffin Empire… Studious Wizards survey the oasis-strewn deserts of the Silver Cities… The grim Necromancers worship in the wastelands of Heresh…and the ravenous demons are immured in Sheogh, their prison world. During certain lunar eclipses the parapet of Sheogh weaken and demons burst forth, plunging Ashan into war. And since the dawn of times, the demon legions have been repelled by the allies thanks to a powerful artifact known as the Blade of Binding. Once again the armies of Sheogh are coming and the Blade will be wielded… Your journey in the world of Might and Magic will be punctuated with riddles, extraordinary encounters and epic battles against creatures searching for some fresh hero blood. Your hero will travel thanks to a node system, so watch your step as some of these nodes might trigger special actions, hide terrifying traps or even legendary treasures such as forgotten artifacts or secret units. Your army will be composed of Core, Elite and Champion units, each of them having specific sizes, strengths and abilities. It’s up to you to choose wisely each of these units combined to the appropriate artifact and work out the best approach to wipe out your enemies. While roaming around Ashan or winning battles, you will learn new artifacts and gather different types of resources such as Ore, Gold and Blood Crystals. These earnings can be used to buy new Elite or Champion units for your army owing to specific Creature Dwelling buildings. Make sure to look everywhere as you will be able to unlock and collect powerful hidden units and artifacts! You will be confronted with many challenges such as defeating the enemy heroes by crossing their armies in standard battles or launching into special challenges and Boss fights where your strategic skills will be place to a severe test. Finally, you can solve puzzle battles and get powerful rewards by finding the right combination and wipe-out the enemy in a limited number of turns.

I bought this game with high expectations. Aggregates scores from qualified reviewers place Might and Magic among the highest rated RPG’s ever for the DS. Unfortunately it didn’t even come close to meeting my expectations; in fact there were moments in the game where I seriously loathed it.
**** THIS SECTION INCLUDES SOME POSSIBLE SPOILERS ****
My first issue is with how completely linear the game is. Not only is the plot linear but even your very footsteps are linear. There is nearly no freedom in movement. You go from space to space in a very stiff fashion. As with every RPG that has ever existed you start the game at level 1 and work your way up. I leveled my character up and finished the first section of the game only to be given control of a NEW character starting back at level 1. After leveling this one up, I got a third character again at level 1. I Leveled up and was given a FOURTH character at level 1. By the time I reached my FIFTH new character the game was kind enough to start me at level 7 for no matter what reason. You can only ever level up to 10 most which again puts honest limitations on what you can do in the game. Finally, let me say that fighting an opponent several levels higher is nearly impossible and several levels not more than is very simple and often dull. All of this adds up to the most claustrophobic and constrained RPG I have ever played.
**** END OF SPOILERS ****
I haven’t played a lot of RPG’s on the DS because very few have gotten better than mediocre scores so maybe I’m out of touch but I did not expect to see load times at the beginning of battles. I reflect back to GTA on the DS which made an entire city for the player and still maintained an brilliant frame rate yet Might and Magic needs a few seconds to set up a small battle. The combat itself is something I’ve never seen before in an RPG and it’s probably the greatest strength of the game. The battlefield is essentially a grid that operates somewhat similar to Tetris or physician Mario. Get three creatures of the same affect in a row and you can make a wall or a battle unit that can attack the opposition. There are also more powerful creatures that can be used to attack when combined with smaller creatures of the same affect. It’s fun for awhile but about halfway owing to the game it started growing tedious and tiresome. The game is sort of a hybrid RPG/puzzle but it doesn’t do either exceptionally well and in the case of the RPG I would argue it performs poorly.
This is the most disappointing video game I have played since `No More Heroes’ on the Wii which was another dud that got splendid reviews from qualified reviewers. I never got into the tale one bit. Switching from character to character only left me caring about none of them and the game committed one of the worst infractions a game can commit, it became a chore to play. I kept expecting that I would get past the slow start and the game would pick up but it never did and when I defeated the final boss I was pleased to place the game away for excellent. I really regret buying this one instead of the new Zelda game for the DS.

This game is a unique blend of RPG, approach and puzzle gameplay. The combat system is a very fascinating hybrid that really grows on you. Very well done.

ok kids, this was the best ds game of 2009. as addictive as crack (reflect tetris meets d&d, and you’ll get the thought), but twice as fun. too terrible the campaign mode was a small small, though.

A mash-up of Puzzle Quest and a chess-like penetrate game. A highly polished and very addictive title if this is the genre that scratches your itch. Easily on my top ten list for DS.
