Maken X
Editorial Review
First-person shooters–the kind of game where you run around shooting everything in sight from a first-person perspective–are commonplace on most gaming consoles, except (for some odd reason) on the Dreamcast. Maken X is one of the few first-person shooters for the system, but it is so unconventional that it ultimately deserves a category all its own.
In this game you play Maken, which is best described as a futuristic sword that has the potential to possess people. The characters you control run around the graphics-rich levels, slashing their way owing to countless bizarre enemies as the plot unfolds. As the game progresses, Maken can “brainjack” some of the other game characters, and that ability to possess others and play the game from their viewpoint is Maken X’s real draw. Another strong point is the game’s capacity for multiple endings. The conclusion is determined by the character that you choose to follow, which allows you to play owing to the game several times without the gameplay feeling stale.
Characters are very simple to control, which is a huge plus given that most combat takes place within sword range of an enemy. At times, it feels like the game would play better from a third-person perspective, but the first-person gameplay is simple to get used to. –T. Byrl Baker

This game is so very, very, very, very, very, very, dull and quite stupid!

This game was a huge letdown. When I heard about this game’s “brainjacking” technology, I was ready for a futuristic romp similar to the extremely fun Messiah. What I got was a repetitive hack job with a convoluted plot and seriously screwed up dubbing. YAWN!

This is the best 3D Game I’ve played in years. It is so differet and unique in that this game is so much more than just a shoot, shoot, kill game. It is incredible to reflect that a Japanese company could make such a excellent 3D shooter game.

This is by far one od the better sports meeting on dreamcast right now (5/2/00). it’s your standard Doom-like game but all you have are small-range weapons. This makes for extremely cool combat. The few problems with the game are a sharp increase in difficulty after a few levels and the plot, since it branches depending on what you do, makes very small sense. A very excellent, original game.

I am not a huge fan of corridor shooters. In fact, I kinda can’t stand them! No matter the system, the frame rate is always lousy; anything but charming! Thank the powers that be for ATLUS, the wonderful people who brought us the ‘Persona’ sports meeting, for Maken X! Unconventional, unusual, exotic, eerie, creepy, haunting, and yet strangely intriguing are just a few words and phrases one can glue to this prime specimen of Dreamcast graphics. The characters designs and costuming are moderately typical of ATLUS, the human characters looking like death-metal roadies, and the villains looking like a Chinese interpretive dance troop (especially those dragon-guys, who wouldn’t want a get-up like that?). The Music is also splendid, combining techno, rock, drum&bass, and east-Indian chanting. (see my reviews of the soundtrack!) The soundtrack can be bought separately on imported CD (a pretty penny but worth every pretty penny).
