Splendid game. I already made a character. Splendid songs! The detail to this game is unbelievable. I don’t have drums or mic but don’t need em’. Just give me my ancient guitar.

I know this review is long, but trust me, read before buying!!
Before I get into the game, just want to say: I just breathed some new life into my PS2 by buying Rock Band, RB Track Pack 1 and RB Track Pack 2. From the beginning I was impressed with the game play and the fact that you can get all your friends involved. (so already better than Karaoke for the non-singers)
I got Guitar hero World Tour PRIMARILY for the track list. When I started playing, the disappointment was nearly immediate.
CONSIDERATIONS:
1. In case you are wondering, it is 100% compatible with the Rock Band instruments on the PS2.(there’s an extra slider apparently for the guitar that would normally come with the full pack, but it really seems irrelevant and by not having it doesn’t seem to hinder your play.)
2. Track list is impressive, but overlaps with Rock Band Track Packs and Rock Band II. Looking back, had I known then, what I know now, I would have gotten RB2 instead. (especially considering my next note)
3. There are 3 Tool tracks that are pretty fun to play. Tool fans will appreciate the hell out of the set up for these 3 tracks.
4. The largest reasons I got this game: the Songs from Linkin Park, Michael Jackson, Smashing Pumpkins, Wings, Tool. And: “To Sing Them”
INSTRUMENT GAME PLAY/GRAPHICS:
If you don’t have a widescreen TV, the graphics become smashed. There is NO way I’ve found so far to fix this. The Menu is very hard to navigate and you spend more time hunting for settings and options than in fact playing the game. The Music bar where you read the button pushes is kind of klunky and because of the social class graphics are sometimes hard to read especially in “overdrive” mode. (sorry, not 100% familiar with the terminology for GH)it looks like graffiti or something, I’m sure they were looking for the “rock life” aesthetic, but it is really irritating. A bright spot is that the Guitar, Bass, Drum play are game accurate: If you’re used to playing expert in RB, you can play toughest in GHWT out of the box. Sadly, playing this way out of the box starts getting dull nearly immediately. (It becomes less hard quicker) The graphics for the band and the crowd are sometimes painful to watch. WAY too robotic! If you’re playing alone, and you do well, the rest of the band starts pointing to you and bowing,(like ‘we’re not worthy’) EXTREMELY irritating! There’s hand clapping in the “overdrive” mode which is equally irritating and sometimes overpowers the music. A majority of the time it doesn’t make sense where/why they’re clapping and it doesn’t seem natural. (again, too robotic.)
VOCAL MODE:
The resolution worst vocal engine I’ve ever played! I’ve played the majority of the Karaoke Revolution sports meeting, a couple of the sing-star sports meeting and I also use the vocal engine in Rock Band for the basis of my comparison. If you’re used to playing “Hard” or “Expert” in Rock Band, you’ll fail every time if you try “Hard” or “Expert” in GHWT. the engine consists of a glowing green dot that punches a continuous hole in the social class image. It’s extremely hard to know if you’re doing well or not during the songs. There are these shape that are supposed to follow the flow of the lyrics. I’m still trying to figure out why they’re there during silent parts. I have considered the thought that maybe the Rock Band Microphone is just not compatible, But, I have a studio compression microphone that connects via USB that I tried using with it too and I get the same results even on an “simple” song. Exact Example: The song “The Kill” by 30 Seconds To Mars. (not an simple song by the way) The song is on RB Track Pack 1 so I’m familiar with it and I reflect my highest percentage on Expert is 98% I see that it’s on GHWT so I tried it out as a comparison. On “Hard” and “Expert” I ALWAYS fail within the first few sentences. I tried it on Medium and I never got higher than 79% The engine is very sloppy and feels like a throw-in rather than being at the same level as the rest of the instrument engines. This is extremely frustrating when you’re playing with your friends and you KNOW you nailed a song on vocals but you still wound up bringing the band down. Everyone I’ve played with who usually will try vocals out on Rock Band, winds up getting frustrated and gives up on them in GHWT before the first song is even over.
COMPARISON TO RIVALSSUMMATION:
In comparing “Guitar Hero World Tour” to it’s direct rival “Rock Band” (even the FIRST Rock Band) Activision has failed by epic proportions. They had a splendid concept in GH 1 and 2 and even had better guitar controllers when it came to “Guitar hero III” I plot to get this controller to use as the bass, or alternate guitar for Rock Band. (Yes it is cross compatible on PS2) Since buying this game, I’ve had the opportunity to play/use the instruments that were meant for it, and they feel flimsy and not built well at all. It’s embarrassing that this is their answer to Rock Band. I paid $14.99 for this game used. After playing it, I wouldn’t pay more than $7.00 now. (Even with the Tool songs) I have to say that I’m probably not going to keep it, opting to get Rock Band II and as soon as I get a PS3, I’m getting Rock Band: The Beatles. I challenge you to play this game, then play Rock Band and try explaining to me that the interface, engine, graphics, and by and large game play are not polished and better on Rock Band.

I bought this standalone game because I own all the other GH sports meeting and just wanted some new songs to play. I don’t have any of the other instruments. I have been very disappointed with the game play so far for the guitar and bass parts. Most of the songs are very dull to play on lead guitar, they are just repetitive clarification and chord progressions. The bass parts are even worse. You will find yourself steadily strumming the same 2 clarification over and over for the entire song. I really marvel how the songs were selected for this game, because so many of them are not particularly guitar heavy or have cool solos. Does anyone really consider “No Sleep Till Brooklyn” or “Eye of the Tiger” to be splendid guitar tracks? Maybe they were selected because they are fun to play on the other instruments, but they shouldn’t call it Guitar Hero anymore when the focus has been taken so much off playing guitars. There are a handful of fun tracks on here, but the majority will have you falling asleep (or your hand falling off from having to do the same thing over and over.) Skip this one unless you buy the band kit.

I was at Best Buy today looking to just buy the drum kit only for guitar hero world tour…NO GAME INCLUDED! I’ve played the game for a while at gamestop…pretty excellent like the others. But red octane, activision, etc is gonna screw people who may have enough guitars and just want the drum kit itself! They’re basically saying, if you want the game too, buy the the complete band kit! To me this a crock! you have to spend an extra 30.00 for something that should’ve been included! I may not buy anything more from this company. It seems to me that they want to take the cheap way out when it comes to selling instruments by themselves!

NOTE: If you do not have a newer PS2 (less than 1 year, this game will not work)
Son received for Christmas, and it wouldn’t launch (stuck at loading screen), took it back and exchanged for a new one . . .guess what, it STILL didn’t work. Googled game and found out that hundreds are experiencing the same conundrum (over the past 5 days).
PS . . . all other PS2 sports meeting work splendid, including the other Gutiar Hero sports meeting with the exception of this one.
