Before you buy this game make sure you have guitars to play it with. You can’t play this game using the controllers like the earlier versions. We have 2 guitars so it isn’t a huge deal for us, but I bought this game for myself. My children play using the guitars, but when I want to play I just want to use the controller as I don’t play very often. Unfortunately this game will not get played as my children aren’t Metallica fans. I will probably not buy another guitar hero game unless you can use the controller. I am not sure if this is Activisions greed taking over or what the deal is. Just a warning if you don’t own guitars or like myself don’t want to use the guitar just the controller, DON’T WASTE YOUR MONEY!

This is the game for right rock fans. If you like Metallica, you’ll like this game. If you don’t know much about Metallica, you will soon see and hear the rock music you’ve been missing. And to the ones who don’t like Metallica…well, I feel sorry for you. Best Guitar Hero Game by far.

For me, pre “Black”-baby book Metallica is the release best band in the last 30 years. While I liked them less and less following “…And Justice for All”, I absolutely like the band. So, buying this game was a no-brainer for me.
But you know what? I would recommend it to anyone who just wants to have a splendid GH workout. This game is immensely fun on expert level, and therefore I am confident that, depending on your stylishness and level of play, the appropriate hard would be fun for you. While I was a small sad to see some of the songs place on here (“No Leaf Clover”, e.g.), it was splendid to get a large dose of “Master of Puppets” (only two tracks are missing!), together with solid offerings from all of “Kill ‘Em All”, “Ride the Lightning” (although the title track is missing – for bring shame on!) and “…And Justice for All” (I would have liked “Blackened” and the title track). In addition, they take my release favorite Metallica cover (the 11:30 “Mercyful Fate”)…and a lot of other slop. But I was more pleased with the selection here than that found on the odious “GH: Aerosmith”.
In addition, there is a large pool of guest acts, many of whom will seem quite esoteric to the non-Metallica fan (Diamondhead, Samhain and Mercyful Fate aren’t bands that typically roll off the tongue today). I was incredibly pleased with the offering, but some might be left scratching their heads. One caveat: if you are one that is offended by occult lyrics, you might want to stay away. There is a lot of this to be found here.
So, in small, I like the game. Not only is it fun, but it is challenging as well. If I had a complaint, it is that the trophies here are more for advertising online play and other instruments (you have to play EVERY instrument career to get some trophies, and you even have to download a song). None of them are hugely hard (e.g. there is not anything like the “Enlightened Guitarist” achievement X-Box owners might remember from “GH 3: Legends of Rock”, but they can be irritating to get. Still, this is a worthy buy.

This game is awesome because you get to play a bunch of splendid Metallica songs.
But, it is much harder than any other Guitar Hero. Simple is like Medium in other Guitar Hero versions.
While Metallica’s music is (was) the best, they are a bunch of douches. I’m sure they demanded their version of Guitar Hero to be harder because “We’re Metallica!”. They are also very douchy about allowing their music to be sold on iTunes/digitally.
That’s my $.02
