With Grand Theft Auto III, Rockstar proves that not all developers are concerned with toning down the violence in their sports meeting. This sequel is even more bloody, violent, and sadistic than its well loved predecessors, offering up an enormous 3-D city in which nearly any criminal act is possible. Players are free to steal cars, beat up the local population for their cash (or weapons), make time with prostitutes, or simply roam to their heart’s make pleased. Those in quest of more structure can go aboard on dozens of plot-driven missions or steal cars that let them play minigames. Nab a cop car and you can go on vigilante missions. Grab a cab and you can play a deadly version of Crazy Taxi. Take a fire truck and you can earn cash putting out fires. The game just never gets dull.
As in real life, there are consequences for your criminality. As your random acts of mayhem mount up, the police start hounding you, eventually calling in SWAT trucks, the FBI, and even the army if you continue down the path of destruction. Shaking these pursuers is easily the most fun part of the game, especially when a bunch of friends are packed in the room to witness your narrow escapes.
Grand Theft Auto III is fine-tuned to near perfection in every category. All the vehicles, from polished sports cars to lumbering dump trucks, handle exactly as you’d expect and smash apart accurately when abused. The three islands in the game are rendered in terrific detail considering their size, and are packed with traffic, pedestrians, and hidden jumps. The audio is equally incredible. Pedestrians talk, cops scream at you, and you can tune in nine different radio stations whenever you are in a car. It all adds up to a monumental achievement: the rare console game for adults that manages to get everything right. –T. Byrl Baker
Pros:
- Offers an enormous world for players to exploit, rendered in staggering detail
- Equally fun whether you go on plot-based missions or run around as a freelance crook
Cons:
- Ultraviolence, foul language, and adult situations mean you’ll want to keep this far away from kids
- It takes too long to get from one island to another, making some missions tedious

You’ve been betrayed and left for dead. Now you’re taking revenge, unless the city gets you first. Mob bosses need a favor, underhanded cops need help, and street gangs want you dead. You’ll have to rob, steal, and kill just to stay out of honest distress. Anything can happen out here. Grand Theft Auto III features a fully 3-D living city, a combination of narrative-driven and nonlinear gameplay, and a completely open environment.
Players are place at the heart of their very own hoodlum movie, in which anything can happen and probably will. With a cast of hundreds, 50-plus vehicles–including sports cars, ice-cream trucks, boats, and buses–three hours of music, (including opera, reggae, house, drum and bass, pop, and disco), a huge array of street-ready weapons, and some of the seediest characters in video game history, Grand Theft Auto III is a sprawling epic that will show you that sometimes crime can pay, and that sometimes it pays you back.

Grand Theft Auto used to be such a fun game when the first title hit us a few years back, but it’s become quite dull. I played with a copy of GTA 3 at a game show and was disappointed. Even though the graphics and alacrity have improved, I just couldn’t feel excited about the gameplay. Spend your cash wisely elsewhere.

i really like this game but it is way to hard and the graphics [stink]. it looks like a 2D game. And the sports meeting about 500,000,000 hours long!!!!!!! it takes way to long to get from one island to the other. out of a 1-200 rating i give it a 30. i would have gave it a zero star but it wouldn’t let me. by and large this game stinks!! have a nice day

I’ve heard of the things about all the Grand Theft Auto sports meeting and they’re … It’s … to go around killing innocent people and police men. It’s … to go around destroying people’s property. This applies to everyone. I’ve never in fact played this game but I’ve learned things about it. It’s … don’t buy it!

As a mother of a teenage son and a legal advocate to end violence against women, I am appalled at your choice to distribute and market this video as a,”game”. This video awards points for killing a prostitute although the the poor player loses some of his cash. A woman is raped, beaten, and murdered in this country every three seconds!!!!! Your video is socially irresponsible and continues to perpetrate myths that violence of any kind is amusing or acceptable. I sincerely do not believe that our founding fathers had this in mind when implimenting the First Amendment. You should be ashamed! I, nor my family, will buy another Sony product again, or use your website. Saddened in PA.

I can’t believe this game was even allowed on the market. Who came up with the thought of introduction a character in a city to kill innocent, upstanding citetzens and steal their cars for cash. This guy serves no purpose at all but just to be a damn terrorist if you know what I mean. THis game will scare you and is only excellent for people who despise authority figures and want to become a mass murderur. Hw dare anyone call the inhumane slaughter of humans humerous.
Usually, an ordinary violent game would contain a excellent guy fighting to save the world and protecting innocent beings or something like that. But, that is not the case in GTA3. And the violence toward weomen is unspeakable. Having sex in a car with a prostitute and then killing her is not amusing nor is it at all entertaining. THis game should be banned from the world. And I thought Max Payne was violent.
TO THE COMPANY WHO CAME UP WITH THIS SICK GAME:
Get your hands out of your sick small pants and make sports meeting that DON’T allow you to kill innocent people just for the hell of it. THat isnt entertainment. Its INHUMANE and teaches not anything but cruelty to other humans.
