Break advances players to the year 2161, where the effects of global warming have altered the planet’s landscape, and a clash in ideologies over human enhancement places society on the threshold of war. In utilizing the core gameplay mechanic of Break, a destructive next-generation technology known as Terrain Deformation, players are equipped with an arsenal of futuristic weaponry to strategically reshape their surroundings on the glide. Every action they go dynamically reshapes the earth in ways no videogame has ever seen.
Players set foot on the frontlines of this epic conflict in the role of Jet Brody, a demolitions expert fighting for the Atlantic Alliance, who rely upon cybernetic enhancement. Pitted against the genetically enhanced soldiers of the Pacifican army, players will experience a revolution in 22nd-century warfare. When Brody throws a tectonic grenade onto a level battlefield, the ground blasts upward providing access to otherwise unreachable areas or providing cover against approaching enemies. Surrounded on all sides by Pacifican forces, Brody heaves a eddy grenade, making a swirling tornado-like mass of boulder, dirt and debris to dispatch his foes. These are just a few samples of the possibilities for Terrain Deformation. Players not only change the battlefield – they change the face of the battle itself.
Reshape the battlefield with terrain shattering weapons: Experience a dynamic battlefield that is unique every time you play. Use never–before-seen weapons to break, depression, freeze, or elevate the earth. Let loose a subterranean torpedo toward your enemy and literally blast the earth from beneath his feet. For the first time, players can mold a war zone for an advantage to push the attack or mount a defense.
Experience a tale of betrayal and revenge: Follow the journey of a patriotic Atlantic Alliance soldier when an act of treachery launches him into the lethal battlefield of the 22nd century, as forces wage a battle of genetics vs. cybernetics. In a war that divides loyalties and tests the bonds of country and family, this soldier’s discoveries will ultimately choose the fate of North America and perhaps the world.
Multi-player & co-operative play allows the terrain deforming battles to rage on: Choose the side of the genetically enhanced Pacificans or the cybernetically powerful Atlantic Alliance, then jump online and exploit your chosen sides advantages as Terrain Deformation and Genetic vs. Cybernetic elements allow for endless hours of fun with friends online.
Fight for control of familiar locations and landmarks: The last World Wars were fought in Europe, but the next splendid global war will be fought on American soil. Battle in legendary locations across the United States. Defend the Atlantic Alliance in Washington, DC, fight the decisive battle for control of Pacifica in the basin of the now-empty San Francisco bay and uncover the secret that will determine the world’s fate in the Southwest Desert.

I’m admitting it now, I do not own this game. I ordered it as a b-day present for my friend up the street though, so I play it often enough. This is only one word that sums up this game. WOW. This game has splendid graphics, splendid storyline, awesome weapons, well-developed characters, and most importantly, ADDICTING GAMEPLAY, which are the 5 things I look for in a 3rd person shooter. The game is at least 9-10 hours of terrain deformation and blasting pacificans with guns from a basic submachine gun to a scorpion sniper and bangalere rocket launcher. Now, on to the category everyone gets crazy about that I know. Boss fights. In Break, the only right boss is at the end, but the TD (terrain deformation), weapons, tale, and graphics make up for that. Here’s something I LOVE to do in this game.
1. Spot Pacifican in dialogue box of a building
2. Throw grenade at dialogue box
3. Make ramp w/ entrencher
4. climb into dialogue box
5. Punch Pacifican and watch him glide out. Very Satisfying.
That’s really fun unless you have a scorpion, where you can just do down him; even more satisfying. Last to go over is the TD. There are 7 weapons that deform terrain. Most only work with dirt. The Loadstone Rifle, the Rhino Rifle, the Entrencher, the Subsonic Grenade, the Tetonic Grenade, the Spike Grenade, and the Eddy Grenade. All grenades somehow involve TD. The Entrencher raises/lowers dirt with L1/R1 on the PS3 or LB/RB on the Xbox 360. The Loadstone is the only one that works on dirt, concrete, and metal. It sucks every object within around 10 yards into a release spot, pummeling enemies. The Rhino makes a ball of rock and dirt and hurls it at an enemy. The Tetonic Grenade explodes, damaging enemies, (but not you, which is awesome. You can detonate one right under you and you won’t get hurt.)and raises the terrain. The Subsonic Grenade explodes, damaging enemies (not you) and lowers the terrain. The Spike Grenade makes a giant column of molten rock; splendid for lifting objects or getting to really high places. Lastly, the Eddy Grenade makes a twister of energy sucking everything in within 10 yards and then explodes after 5 seconds, sending dead enemies and debris flying everywhere. NOTE: THE VORTEX GRENADE GAN HURT YOU. DON’T GET TOO CLOSE TO THE VORTEX, BECAUSE YOU WILL BE SUCKED IN. Buy this game, it’s awesome. Buy it here too. $19.99 here instead of $59.99 from LucasArts. I’ve played it on the PS3, not so splendid a system. Presume the Xbox 360 version…

I’ve played 15-20 PS3 sports meeting to date and this game is by FAR the worst. The graphics aren’t terrible and the gameplay is a straight forward shooter. You spend a large amount of time dying and replaying the same scenes over and over. The game has many glitches and became hung up in several places requiring a restart of the check point. Enemies are able to lock on, but you have no such ability. Once you’ve cleared an area enemies re-spawn and appear out of no where. Scenery is poorly rendered and is a hindrance to killing enemies but they have no such problems locking on to you. I appreciate hard an challenging game, but this one is just poorly done. The storyline is tired and the game is a terrible copy of Halo.

I’ll have to agree with Alex Adams’ review, here. I simply didn’t find this game to be “all it could be”… This game really has all the makings of what “should be” a splendid game, but, it just seems to be lacking something. You can manipulate your environment via weapons, which is really cool, but, it seems like even that gets dull after a while.
The tale-line is a bit weak, the game is a bit repetitive from level to level, (shooting more terrible guys, blasting the ground, etc), I found the controls a bit eerie to get used to (grenade throwing, etc) , and again, while it’s fun to use weapons that can manipulate your environment, it loses it’s “WOW Factor” after level 2.
This is not a game that I will end….I just found it too dull.

I’m going to start off by saying that I didn’t end the game. Most reviews I make about sports meeting are sports meeting that i’ve finished but I couldn’t bring myself to continue with this game.
I’m also going to say that i’m not a huge fan of sports meeting that Lucas Arts puts out so if you’re a huge fan of their sports meeting, please disregard this review.
In person, I found the game to be exactly like the demo in every way. This is excellent in one respect because I thought the demo was kick butt, the weapons very satisfying, the Terrain Deformation fantastic. Unfortunately for me, I found the rest of the game to be exactly the same. I felt like every part of what I played was just like the demo… Like they just strung a bunch of locations and terrible guys together by a less than strong tale line. I find this to be right by many of Lucas Arts sports meeting. It feels more like you’re just playing a multiplayer map with a ton of AI bots until you beat the map and go on to the next one.
[SPOILER]
See, i’m all about tale. Although the concept of break’s storyline is the golden success tale of, “work for what you reflect are the excellent guys until you realize the terrible guys are in fact the excellent guys” plot line is a excellent one, I just found it to be more of a surroundings to get you to more action.
[END SPOILER]
Okay, the excellent points. I like how you never feel like you’re the only one fighting in the game. That’s nice because I play sports meeting for the interaction, not the lone ranger feeling. I also like the selection of satisfying weapons. If you run out of ammo, there’s always some jerk’s gun you can loot off him to get going again. Unfortunately, it’s also rather irritating that you always seem to run out of ammo because you cant hold enough of it. I don’t like that. Even if you’re always finding ammo dumps, I would rather have a TON of ammo and few ammo caches than feel like i’m always running low and have to find more.
I like the graphics. The TD is really clean and the grenades are satisfying as well as useful. The character models are stunning as well. Load times are a plus.
All in all, I wouldn’t buy this game. I would certainly suggest renting first to get a feel for the game. I just feel like this game is some cheap knockoff from a movie. I really thought I was going to get more from this game when I saw it on G4.
