I seldom use my DSi (now my DSi XL) camera. I have a digital camera that I like way better. I reflect the DSi camera was really only place there for kids (even with the neato commercials showing adults or grown-up youth) as they are less likely to have a nice quality digital camera. When I say kids I mean the 5-10 year ancient crowd — most kids grown-up than that (some younger) have their own cell phone to snap pics. So when I saw this title I had to pick it up — I thought it would be a splendid way to use that thing I never use on my DSi. Frankly at this point I expected way more software that takes advantage of the DSi features.
Foto Confrontation is primarily a fighting game. It has RPG elements. You are stuck on some island and have an objective (standard video game fare) and there’s a girl with you. You need to use the camera to take pictures of, well, anything that then gets place in the capsule and a monster gets made from the colors in the picture you took. It’s a unadorned concept really. Theoretically every affect variation should result in a different monster. It is quite fun to watch the monsters spawn. Since you need this small canister thing to do it I haven’t wanted to dissipate one (or the cash to buy one) just seeing if the same colors spawn the exact same monsters. I’m a hoarder in any video game – a collector — and I dislike wasting resources.
The fighting is fun and turn based. You can chose a skill and then you fight. You have to organize your deck (group of monsters) how you like – adding or deleting based on the monsters unique fighting capacity and strength. While you level up it really just allows you to control higher level monsters. At this point I can’t find any suggestion that it increases skills and so on. Each monster has a cost and lower to higher = their level of control. So a monster with a cost of 3 means that, if you are level 3 or above, you should be able to control it. You can buy items as well. The tutorials are pretty excellent for the game and the manual will be of some help.
I’m not finished with the game but so far have not lost interest. As far as tale its just your same ancient same ancient. It feels nearly like Pokemon as well where you amass a group of monsters and then fight with them. There isn’t any blood and the creatures seem to go unconscious (see why it reminded me of Pokemon?)so this would be fine for any age outcome with a DSi.
The graphics are o.k. The sound is o.k. It’s the concept that gives this game its glow. Another really brilliant thing is you could place this game down and come back to it later. Since it is primarily fighting there isn’t a ton of tale that you have to keep fresh.
I’m awarding 5 stars. I would rate the game itself as around 4 but I added a 5th star due to the fact that this uses the DSi camera in a new and unique way. I reflect its vital for the game developers and companies to realize that we would all like new and unqiue thoughts in our sports meeting!
