Destruction Derby 64
Editorial Review
Destruction Derby 64 brings the chaotic world of deliberate car crashes to the racetrack. You get points for completing laps, yes, but the real high scores–and the real fun–come from making high-alacrity impacts.
This is a decent racing game, fun and quick-paced. But where 3DO has really raised the bar is with the crash effects. Cars collide with a satisfying crunching sound. Smoke belches from under what’s left of your hood. Car parts go flying. Huge dents appear right at the point of impact–even the taillights go out, one by one. After a few minutes your car looks like something out of a junkyard.
All this carnage makes Destruction Derby 64 one of the most fun car racing sports meeting to appear in quite a while. Aside from the pure and unadorned smash-’em-up derbies, you can choose a traditional looped racetrack race. Well, not exactly traditional: half of the cars race in one management, the other cars go in the contrary management. What happens when the two racing groups meet isn’t pretty, but it is fun. Bonus: one track is laid out in a crash-inducing figure eight, just like your favorite Hot Wheels sets.
The game’s only weakness is the save functionality: you need a memory card to save, and even then you need to complete an entire series to save and go to the next level. Too terrible you can’t save after every race: it would have reduced the annoyance factor considerably. But, nitpicking aside, the combination of high-alacrity racing and excellent ancient-fashioned smash-’em-up thrills makes Destruction Derby 64 a first-place winner. –Jeanne Uy

I am honest when I say this is my favorite game of all time…. this game was and still is unbelievably awesome. I used to always play my 64, and I did it with my cousins, playing all the game modes in this game. Not anything about this game is terrible… not anything. I reflect this game is better than any game, on any system, or in any genre. And I am a honest addict when it comes to gaming. I just can’t get over this sports meeting brilliance, how simple it is, or how underrated it is.
If anyone is reading this, you better buy it. There is no possible way you will not delight in this one.
