MediEvil took many players by bolt from the blue in 1998 with its zany British sense of humor and skeletal hero Sir Daniel Fortesque. Now, that bony knight returns in a sequel with a lot of fun gimmicks and the same solid play that made the first MediEvil such a hit.

This time around, Dan’s been yanked from his eternal slumber once again, only to find himself inside a museum in Victorian England, where an occultist named Palethorn has wakened the dead. Dan must defeat these walking fossils, using his sword and other weapons, while also solving an array of puzzles. Dan’s got some new moves to help him by the side of the way, including the ability to stick his skull onto a walking hand so that he can search inside small cracks.

Compared to the series debut, MediEvil II offers better graphics, but isn’t quite as amusing. The original’s 3-D camera problems haven’t been fixed and in some cases are worse than before, but by and large MediEvil II makes for a worthy follow-up. –Robb Guido

Chaos Theory offers splendid replayability in release player mode, thanks to its vast, open level design. There’s always more than one way to realize your objectives. At the beginning of each mission you are given your objectives, but you must choose how to go about completing them. Decisions about secrecy versus conflict are yours to make, too. Should you penetrate a mission with non-lethal weaponry, a host of guns and ammo, or a small bit of both? You choose.

The Splinter Cell franchise is known for its tense, secrecy-driven multi-player modes, and Chaos Theory is no exception. This version adds unique cooperative modes where you and your teammates must complete infiltration missions. Try to keep each other alive. Spider-Man was a huge PlayStation hit (it subsequently appeared on both the Dreamcast and PC) because it finally allowed superhero action sports meeting to get out of their 2-D beat-’em-up ruts and into the 3-D world. And now the original game’s sequel is more than excellent enough to catch PlayStation gamers in the web once more.

Penetrate Electro’s tale follows the plans of that nefarious, electricity-spewing terrible guy Electro, who’s trying to tap an energy fund that’ll make him much more powerful and perilous. After a training level that familiarizes you with the game’s controls (and new abilities such as the web-grab, where Spider-Man can send out a web and pull an object back toward him), you must web-swing around New York City and stop Electro, his goons, and various other villains from Spidey’s infamous rogue’s gallery. The cast of heavies include the Bombshell, Hammerhead, the Sandman, the Lizard, and a few others from the first game.

The plot this time out is a small tighter than the last game’s mix of tales, and the game draws on the villains’ well-known personas to make each encounter fascinating. Again, Spider-Man creator Stan Lee narrates the tale in his inimitable stylishness, and the voice acting is strong throughout. You can also seek out a few classic Spider-Man covers hidden throughout the game.

Spider-Man 2: Penetrate Electro is a splendid sequel; it adds quite a few new tricks and villains, and succeeds in terms of tale and plot. It does carry over some of the camera problems from the first game, it depends a bit too much on puzzlelike gameplay, and the save system is still stingy enough to be irritating (you can only save between levels), but webheads out there aren’t going to care, and it’s nice to see such strong properties are still being released for the excellent ancient PlayStation One. –Bob Andrews

Vigilante 8 is a gorgeous shoot-’em-up driving game that also happens to be a lot of fun. The premise is honestly complicated: penetrate the level, guide around picking up weapons, and blast your opponents to kingdom come. Any questions?

There are several vehicles to control in the game, from a nimble dune buggy to a hard-to-kill raise up complete with camper. There’s even a UFO in the two-player mode. Lining a target up in your sights is simple enough using the digital pad, and controlling the vehicle is even more charming when you use the analog pads on a Dual Shock controller. You’ll need all the help you can get, as the enemy vehicles are relentless.

Graphically this game is a stunner, with terrific lighting effects and over-the-top explosions. The sprawling environments you’ll encounter are universally detailed and interactive. You’ll slide sideways down a ski slope on a snowy mountain during one of the game’s more frantic levels. Another fun challenge involves dodging incoming aircraft at the airplane graveyard in the dusty desert. Action fans will undoubtedly want to see the world from behind the wheel of the cars in Vigilante 8. –T. Byrl Baker

Few racing sports meeting for the PlayStation can approach Need for Alacrity III: Hot Pursuit in terms of car selection, track layout, and sheer fun. Combine the game’s quality with the fact that it was added to the PlayStation’s bargain Greatest Hits pool, and you have a title that deserves to be in the library of any racing fan.

Hot Pursuit gets its name from our favorite mode of gameplay, in which players try to exceed the reach of the long arm of the law by greatly exceeding the alacrity limit. The ultimate goal is to beat your opponent to the end line, but usually it’s hard enough just dodging oncoming traffic, swerving around police roadblocks (complete with spike strips), and trying to keep pursuit vehicles from slamming you off the road. It’s nearly as fun to watch replays as it is to race, and we’ve only discussed one of the game’s five types of play. This diverse, quick-paced racer is certainly a keeper. –T. Byrl Baker
