Zapper – One Wicked Cricket
- Platform: Nintendo GameCube
- ESRB Rating: Everyone
- Genre: Approach
Product Description
The main character of Zapper is a cricket who must rescue his brother, Zipper, from a pilfering magpie. With a storyline that doesn’t go much deeper than that, Zapper very quickly becomes about as exciting as watching real crickets. The goal of the game is to maneuver Zapper owing to a completely linear 3-D world filled with mad bumblebees, picketing beavers, giant snails, blade-swinging statues, cascading waterfalls, and various other exotic dangers that make you feel like you’re in a hybrid version of A Bug’s Life and Indiana Jones. There are six worlds and 20 levels to Zapper, and experienced gamers will have small difficulty moving owing to all of them quickly. Helping Zapper is his ability to zap lightninglike sparks out of his antennae, which causes some bugs to jump and some boxes to open. By freeing enough fireflies, Zapper gains super-zap abilities, which will eliminate certain dangers and open otherwise locked boxes.
Anyone who has played Frogger will immediately recognize the similarity of Zapper. Each level has a grid as its base, which itself is well integrated into the six unique worlds. Zapper jumps and zaps his way from square to square and is able to rotate in place–a very useful feature when trying to avoid a swinging blade to your left, a river to your right, and the void behind you. Early in the game these dangers are easily navigable, though even the most deft gamer will die often before figuring out exactly which obstacles can be traversed. Later in the game these dangers multiply to such an extent that getting past them requires more commitment than the game deserves. And because the game is not much fun, finishing it feels more dutiful than challenging. –Bill Hummel

Street Hoops
Product Description
Throw down your best moves as you fight for bragging rights in an all-out, street level, blacktop blitz. Street Jewelry is the real deal…the most authentic and realistic street basketball game available. Choose your team and then rock 10 of the most notorAmazon.com Review
Street Jewelry is like the kid who shows up on the first day of school decked out in brand-new, brand-name duds, trying really hard to be cool and laid-back, while his rival (in this case, NBA Street) effortlessly oozes hip, relaxed charm. It’s not that it’s a terrible game–it’s that it could be so much more, if only it wasn’t trying so hard, and in the most shallow ways.
Everything about Jewelry is overly complicated, with no real payoff. The players can be personalized and stylized–you get to pick haircuts, jewelry, tattoos, and clothing. But instead of being a cherry on top of an otherwise splendid game, this embellishment is in some ways more fascinating than the actual court time. This issue of mixed-up priorities really takes root in the mechanics of the game. Considering there’s no tutorial, the overly designed controller configuration gets in the way of just starting up and playing the game for the fun of it. In another example, unless you assign controllers to teams in the opening menu, the game mysteriously starts playing itself.
The music is splendid, with songs by mainstream hip-hop artists. But the abundance of tie-in deals seems like overcompensation for poor play. Jewelry sometimes feels like a catalog, heavy with ads for clothing, sneakers and sunglasses. In a spectacular example of the obtrusiveness of this co-branding, gamers can get cheats by buying real-world Sprite (vending machines for the soda are also littered throughout the game maps). Still, there’s a honest amount to recommend Jewelry–mainly the presence of real-life street ballers. The opening cinematic of inspired tricking makes you want to invest the time to make this game pay off. Anyone who just wants to play a small ball with their friends–a raise up game instead of a tournament–would be better off looking to the unmatched NBA Street. –Jennifer Hauseman
Pros:
- Options like affront and intentional foul evoke right baller bravado
- Hip-hop soundtrack includes “Da Rockwilder” (Method Man and Redman), “Who We Be” (DMX), “Make Em Say Ugh” (Master P), and “Rollout” (Ludacris)
Cons:
- More development time was spent on partnership deals than gameplay
(This review refers to the PlayStation2 version of this game.)

NBA Courtside 2002
Product Description
The keys to a flourishing basketball video game are its controls, artificial intelligence, and pacing. NBA Courtside 2002 excels in all three areas, with only a few problems. One is the defensive AI, which often leaves itself open to dunks and quick breaks, and is generally a droop when it comes to rebounds. This can be remedied with the higher difficulty levels, but that makes the computer a flawless shooter, even from behind the line.
The controls are excellent, but take some getting used to if you’ve spent a lot of time with other basketball simulations. Players use the C stick on the controller to pass the ball. No button critical is necessary; just point the stick at the desired player and the ball is away. Unfortunately, this same system is used to brilliant defensive players, and that can be hard, especially if the action is moving quick and furious. The game does feature quite a few game modes: practice, exhibition, season, and even an fascinating mode that takes place on top of the roof.
As you might expect, the player models are charming, crisp, and photorealistic. The animations are detailed with nary a brake or glitch. Even the crowd looks excellent, and benched players are likewise in full 3-D. The audio isn’t so impressive, but. Never have I heard such uninspired and slow commentary–it often seems to be describing plays from another game, or worse, talks about plays that happened 30 seconds prior to the contemporary action. Not a game breaker, but certainly not as excellent as the competition.
NBA Courtside 2002, aside from the minor flaws described above, is still a stellar entry in the basketball fold and an asset for the Nintendo GameCube library. It’s worth the buy now, and with a few fixes, it’ll be a real contender next year. –Bob Andrews
