I bought this for my 7 year ancient granddaughter, and she has been playing it non-stop! I ordered it on-line and received it within 3 days, during the busy Christmas season.

I loved the Diner Dash game on the DS and a friend suggested picking up Cake Mania. I saw this sequel and got it instead.
And was terribly disappointed.
The basis of the game is arcade-like and quite fun. Customers tell you what they want and you have to recreate your cake confections before they get irritated with waiting and walk off. You can keep them entertained with a tv or a cookie to help the waiting. Their instructions range from unadorned cakes to ones that have double layers, different shapes and cake toppers. Some have said the game is too slow, but you have the option of buying shoes that will alacrity up your baker. These can be upgraded more than once until you are nearly TOO quick.
The sound effects are unadorned and quite irritating. The wacky kids with the inflatable pool duck toys are the worst with their canned “Hey its my turn!” Everything else is pretty much simple to ignore, but add small to the game itself.
HOWEVER, Cake Mania 2 has one really crippling conundrum. This was originally a PC game and the real estate of the DS screen is not anything compared to what you can get out of a computer monitor. Instead of doing a back/forth switch screen like Diner Dash does to get over this hurdle, the game tries to shove everything on one screen. AND FAILS. TERRIBLY. Everything requires resolution precision and the touchscreen seems to be a small off as well. The places to trigger the right cake shape and frosting colors are tiny so you have to stab the stylus like it was a needle in the exact spot. Also, the customers request their instructions in a “picture bubble” and when it gets to double layer cakes with toppings its often hard to tell exactly what they are asking for. The sprites are so tiny that a round cake with red frosting can look like a heart shape cake with red frosting and vice versa. Especially when there’s a bear or cat topping on the top of it all to obscure even more of the cake you are supposed to be baking up.
By and large, the game is quite alot of fun, although extremely simple. The only thing that makes it hard is the touchscreen issues. The developers must have been aware of this hurdle because it seems to be reflected in the game’s difficulty.
Ah and its not that much different from Cake Mania 1 either, which is a superior product in many ways. It’s a bring shame on that this second effort couldn’t keep up the fun of the first, it just simply doesn’t add enough to spice things up and the frustrating controls suck alot of enjoyment out of it.

Very much the same as the original Cake Mania. This has about double the game play. You really get your cash’s worth.
The graphics look fantastic on the DSi XL. It makes a huge difference in being able to see the second layer on a two layer cake. If you are playing on a DS Lite then you will have some problems with things being too small to see. The game is still enjoyable though.
Customers come into your bakery and order cakes. Your job is to fill the instructions while keeping the customers pleased. You keep them pleased by filling instructions quickly, giving out cupcakes, or turning the TV to their favorite channel.
I would recommend this game for when you have time to kill and just want to relax.

This game has it’s pluses and minuses….but by and large, I really like this game. THe music is nice…my husband even commented on it as he even bunged playing his PSP long enough to tell me that he liked it too!
Cake Mania 2 offers 3 sports meeting in 1….you can choose to help your friend Resa start up her bakery…..OR you can help your friend Jack SAVE his bakery…..OR you can play the ENDLESS mode (in which you don’t get extra lives and you just play until you lose….and the upgrades are available every 3 levels of gameplay). I liked the variety of characters in this game and the fact that you don’t have to side-scroll to place toppers on your cakes.
I didn’t give this game 5 stars because the topper icons are too close together and it is often hard to characterize the shape of the TOP layer of the layer cakes (problems that I never encountered in Cake Mania 1). I didn’t like the fact that this game (in the first two modes) doesn’t save your total score. It only saves your scores in the ENDLESS game mode.
Drawbacks aside… I really do like this game and I keep it in my DS case with my other contemporary favorites.
