The Legend of Metafalica: Tale Behind the Struggle Set on the same planet as the first AR Tonelico, this game focuses on the region of Metafalss at the top of a tall, narrow tower. Inhabited by refugees, this artificially made land can’t sustain the crops people need to survive, but the legend of Metafalica offers a faint glimmer of hope. It is said that, long ago, whenever a Holy Maiden sang a special hymn called Metafalica it produced a utopia filled with fertile land, and this myth gives people aspiration.
Efforts to make this type of world are denied again and again by the ruling Goddess, making an atmosphere of hopelessness and desperation, and a new government called the Grand Bell rises to potential promising to make a utopia without the Goddess’ help. As a player in the unfolding drama, you’ll have to choose between living with the Goddess or rebelling against her. The realism of your chosen character’s quandary is enhanced by the experience of moving owing to the city of Pastalia and navigating ruins on an SD graphics screen.
The Song Magic Battle System Has Evolved
The song battles from the first game are improved upon — the two-part battles in this game again focus on vanguards protecting Reyvateil maidens and the song magic unleashed by those maidens. Divided into an “attack” segment and a “defend” segment, battle centers around timing, harmonics, and synchronization between your Reyvateils. As you advance in the game, the things you learn and enemies you conquer add additional capabilities to your arsenal. Pairings between characters that have made strong individual bonds place even more potential at your disposal, bringing the events that occur in between struggles into the fray and adding strategic interest.
Object Crafting and the Cosmosphere
Between battles, you’ll stay busy interacting with shop keepers, moving around the region, exploring the maidens’ object crafting capabilities, and “Diving” into psychological realms, where you can explore a Reyvateil’s “Cosmosphere,” uncovering her emotions and spiritual potential. Unlike in the previous version, interactions in the Cosmosphere have effects in the real world. You can even date other characters, impacting the evolving social networks of Metafalss. The intricate conversations that occur, the wide range of character interactions, and the unique magic behind the harmonics of song battle give this game a rich, innovative texture.

A fun game but full of corny sexual inuendos that get dull after about ten minutes. Game is very text heavy and is based around getting to know the girls in the game better by talking to them. So if you delight in lots of text in your RPGs, (I do) then this game is excellent, the first was better but.

This game is truly awesome with splendid gameplay and a excellent tale. I just couldn’t place it down. The only reason I didn’t give it 5 stars is that there are some grammatical errors In the game. It throws me off when during an awesome scene someone misuses a word or gets a sentence backwards. Other than that minor inconvience this game is awesome and a splendid product for all right gamers.

I wanted so terribly to like this game. This was the first jRPG I bought for my PS2, and I had such high hopes for it. But those hopes were dropped, smashed, shattered into the ground amidst a pretty chorus of gorgeous music and strikingly excellent visual stylishness.
The parts I like about this game don’t mitigate how much I dislike it, but instead make it worse. It’s like someone gave me a 24k ingot of gold, but mandatory me to hide it in a locked safe gathering dust, flatly forbidding me to delight in its beauty or regard.
For specifics, let me start by saying what’s excellent about this game. A lot of things, really!
1. The music in all settings and usages is utterly heart-wrenching (in the best possible way). The musical composer’s efforts come out as a mystical Celtic mix of song that soars with the heart and brings a tear to the eye.
2. The visual stylishness of the game is awesome all around. The character art is top-notch, especially the girl characters who are all lovely. The scenery is imaginative and creatively designed. Even the menus are drawn with a shaded-metalic stylishness that makes the game look techno-magical.
3. The battle system is gifted and original! In a gaming era where RPGs, and jRPGs especially, fight to differentiate themselves from the menu-driven “press X for victory” battle systems of yester-generation, Ar Tonelico II stands out with a cruelly fun and intelligent attack/defense system. Actions are all player-interactive and require skill in reflexes. The battles aren’t overtly hard, but don’t need to be hard for the fun factor.
All these superlatives WOULD HAVE made a ground-breaking RPG, if not for one hideous, overriding, gut-sickening flaw. This flaw is one SO BAD that it takes those superlatives, drains their awesomeness, and uses said awesomeness as fuel for its own game-braking badness. This flaw, place simply, is the tale.
Just 30 minutes into the game, it struck me how much tale text there was to click owing to. I spent far more time critical X to pass dialogue boxes than I spent moving my characters or engaging in battle. I didn’t reflect too much of it at first. It was the beginning of the game, I figured. jRPGs are naturally text-heavy at first, to get introductions and tutorials out of the way.
But it didn’t let up! The tale text just went on and on! At first I thought, “This RPG is really heavy on the visual novel elements.” Then, after going no less than FORTY FIVE MINUTES between battles having done not anything but press X to read tale text, a horrible consciousness occured to me. This game isn’t a jRPG with visual novel elements. It’s a visual novel with RPG elements!
I’m sorry Ar Tonelico II, but your tale is way, way WAY too heavily expositioned. I play RPGs to fight monsters and cast magic spells, not to read entire lunch-breaks worth of tale text. An RPG’s tale should complement the core gameplay mechanic of combat, not REPLACE combat as the core gameplay!
The straw that broke this reviewer’s back was one particular visual novel-stylishness aspect. During in-game cutscenes, the player is often given the choice of having long dialogue sessions with his magic-casters, for the sake of improving their magic and learning new spells. These sessions offer NO gameplay interaction whatsoever. It’s simply “Press X many times to read a side-tale. You’ve learned a new spell!”
This game in fact tried to reward me for meeting owing to its dialogue! And that reward might have meant something, if not for the inanely long time between one battle to the next.
I highly recommend against buying or playing this game, unless you want to use your PS2 to read a novel. And in that case, just go read a novel. At least then, you won’t feel like a video game is holding hostage some necessarily awesome design and demanding that you read its tale as ransom.

Yep, if you want to have a sore thumb for few days this is the game for you. I liked the first game and thats the reason I bought this one. The huge difference is the battle system which uses constant critical on the buttons to defend your reyvateils. I didn’t end the game because my thumb couldn’t go on. I rate this game as fun but painful.

Ar Tonelico II: Melody of Metafalica is an Incredible game and even though the Raki glitch pissed me off a bit, I still give many props that anyone chose to localizes and translate such a crazy game with immense amount of dialog.
First off there are Errors and bugs in the US version that are not seen in the JP version. The text has some grammar errors; issues include misspellings, commas, name mix-ups, There are also various translation errors. to top it all off there is the infamous Raki Glitch. (which is a glitch that appears In the third-to-last boss battle of the American version, there is a bug which causes the game to freeze! When the enemy Raki uses the skill “Fractal Change” the game freezes due to memory usage exceeding the system’s capabilities.)
Also Sometimes, when your stuck in the game, all you have to do is question your party to give you a hint and then your well on your way, BUT! since in the U.S version has errors in the translation, the character in fact tells you to go to a place that no longer exists.
How must I beat a game with such unfortunate errors?
one answer can be leveling up as much as possible, another answer can be finding a walkthrough online or buying one at the store. In the case of the Raki glitch, I went to Youtube and found Some examples in how to defeat her (ironically, using another glitch, which allows you to freeze the battle timer) Trust me, it can get a bit frustrating, when your stuck in the game and you have characters giving you fake information.
So, In the end, why! did I give this Five stars?! If your willing to look pass people’s criticism or what anyone says about the translation or localization. Melody of Metafalica is an Incredible RPG and is certainly worth getting. It Is possible to reach The End of this game, but it will be challenging, in the end it’s up to you. Will you take the challenge?
