I got Action Replay for my son because he wanted to collect powers and Pokemon to play against his friends. I had mixed feeling about this because it could be considered cheating at the game.
THE RISK
We were at a GameStop store purchasing sports meeting when a boy came in with his DS not effective. The clerk at the store said he had degraded the firmware code by using Action Replay. According to the GameStop employee, he saw a lot of this and it is not a warranty repair. This made quite an depression on my son. He did not want his prized possession to be “bricked” and useless.
I did some research online and confirmed what I heard at GameStop. Action Replay can corrupt your firmware. The fun of playing with cheat codes was not worth the risk for us.
UPDATE 3-08-10
Google Search: Action, Replay, Bricked (Hey, I didn’t make this stuff up)
FROM NINTENDO’S SITE
The game cheating device, Action Replay, has not passed our testing process to ensure it will work safely and properly with our system and sports meeting. These types of unlicensed accessories run the risk of corruption issues with save files or causing stable hurt to the system/sports meeting they are used with. Action Replay is not a device Nintendo can recommend using, this is why the thread has been locked.
To see if an accessory has passed our testing process, you can look on the packaging for the Seal of Quality. This seal is a small circle with a black or gold starburst around it. Inside it reads, “Official Nintendo Seal.” This seal lets you know the product has passed our testing and evaluation process.

I bought this for my ten year ancient’s DSi. It will not stay inserted in the DSi, it just pops back out. Yes, I have the right version of the device and I am inserting it in the right management. There is no tech support info for this model on the manufacturer’s website. The only option seems to be to return it. It works if you hold it in place, though. My son suggested using duct tape, but we chose to return it instead.

Presume a disappointed seven year ancient on Christmas morning when the Action Replay will not even stay in his DSi…..the cord included does not have the right connector to be inserted into his DSi. Yes, I bought the right version for the DSi. I contacted the company and they said it must be defective. So, we can send it back for replacement? I’m returning it. He doesn’t need this.

I selected up one of these today after seeing that it allowed for endorsement of game saves. It’s not a feature that I plot on using, but there was something that I wanted to try out.
I bought a few used sports meeting from GameFly (Time Hollow, Jake Hunter and Trauma Center 2). Unfortunately, there was no way to reset them to factory settings built into any of them. I wanted to play each one from the beginning without having any bonus features unlocked. That’s where the Action Replay DSi comes into play. I had a theory that I might be able to endorsement a game save, then restore it to a different game, effectively forcing the cartridge to revert to factory settings.
It worked like a charm.
I was able to use Trauma Center 2 to restore Jake Hunter, Scribblenauts to restore Trauma Center 2, and Professor Layton and the Curious Village to restore Time Hollow (something to do with cartridge information being the incorrect size). I then backed up the factory settings for each game so I can pass them onto someone else when I’m owing to.
On another note, the Action Replay DSi doubles as a new version of the ancient Sports meeting & Music cartridge. I was able to plug in the MicroSD card from my original G&M cartridge and immediately boot up those sports meeting, as well as play my homebrew stuff.
As far as the longterm quality that the other reviewers are talking about, I can’t give any insight, but it got the job done for exactly what I wanted it to do.
