4 Wheel Thunder
Editorial Review
What do you get when you go the over-the-top gameplay of the water-based racer Hydro Thunder to gritty land-based environments? 4 Wheel Thunder, of course. This pseudosequel is a nice-looking game that manages to entertain despite its simplistic gameplay.
4 Wheel Thunder lets players race a variety of huge-wheeled off-road monster cars and trucks across 24 tracks. The wide tracks are brimming with shortcuts, so exploration is encouraged. We had to practice for hours to find the proper racing line, as the computer opponents are incredibly hard to beat until you’ve won a few races and upgraded your ride.
The graphics impressed us, as 4 Wheel Thunder has detailed vehicles that bounce owing to several well-rendered environments. Best of all, the frame rate is absolutely charming regardless of how many objects are onscreen. The only thing lacking is deep gameplay. All of our time was spent picking up the alacrity-boost potential-ups scattered around the track, which give a nice burst of alacrity for a few seconds. Unfortunately there are no other potential-ups, weapons, or anything else to spice up the racing, making the game more monotonous than it should be. 4 Wheel Thunder is nowhere near as over the top as Hydro Thunder, but it’s still a lot of fun as a pure racing game. –T. Pros:
- Clean, detailed graphics that run at a charming frame rate
- Challenging gameplay
Cons:
- Few potential-ups mean the racing can get dull at times
- Cheap computer opponents are frustrating until you can upgrade your vehicle

Is this game the best racer on the Dreamcast? Well, I reflect so.The graphics ae nice with maybe a few signs of cardboard cut outs but besides that its just 60 fps all the way. im mean with you going 120 miles an hour and kicking up sand while trying to get past other off road vehicles, its pretty sweet. Oh yah, did i mention that is has a excellent amount of visually stunning off road vehicles? The music is not all that terrible i mean. I reflect it fits the game pretty well. But the sound could get some getting used to, but still, its not all that terrible. With over 30 tracks (I do again) 30 tracks and a endless amount of shortcuts, it will be a while before u end up going to the store and buying another game. There’s 10 outside tracks which are extremely long (it will probably take u a small over 10 minutes to go aroung one track 2 times. And they are really spectacular. Infact i must warn u. Concentrate more on the racing then the view of these gorgouse tracks. There are also some bonus tracks that go by the side of with these. There are also plenty of indoor tracks that are eqaully stunning. And then theres the multiplayer. Which then has there own excellent amount of nice looking tracks, as well as cool looking arenas. This game may be a bit hard and frustrating at times, but it just adds to the already high replay regard. With the speeds in this game the dreamcasts controlor fits it perfectly. So,if your choosing to add a racing title to your pool of dreamcast sports meeting, get this one. I promise you wont be sorry.

This game is for the hardcore extreme gamers. Unfortunently I am not one of them. This game is an arcade based with time limits, you also pretty much get first every time in order to go on. I dont know maybe some people like time limits but all my friends know, I DONT. Once I got bored with my other sports meeting I started to play it. I would of rated it better anyway if it wasent for one thing. It is very buggy. I would play and just about every race It seemed like the ground just dissappered to leave my truck/buggy to fall of the world to its doom. It some times freezes up in the begining where it says 3-2-1 and no GO.

This is a nice looking game. Cycle. There’s no pop-up anywhere in the scenery and the outside tracks are filled with many different lifelike landscapes. The pig float in the air on some tracks is amusing and seems appropriate for this game that has an arcade feel, not simulation. I don’t know why Midway made the game so hard though. If you miss one nitro boost on the track then your chances of finishing near the top are greatly reduced. At the starting line, the map in the corner shows that most of the vehicles are already halfway owing to the first lap. I don’t get it. I like sports meeting with a high degree of difficulty, but it gets out of hand here at times. I’m sure many people will say this game is simple like a few always do, but I don’t reflect I’m incorrect. It’s as if the game wants you to lose all the time since at the end of every race you don’t place first in, the announcer immediately says, “You Lose!” The controls and graphics are brilliant, but again the extreme difficulty brings this game down a bit as far as replay regard goes.

4wheel is a splendid game with lots of alacrity and no brake in two player, this is better than hydro thunder, but this game is too hard. If your having distress opening stuff up than play arcade with two players. buy this

If you like your racing sports meeting to be more of an ‘arcade’ experience and less of a simulation (like I do), then this is the game for you. Splendid Graphics, decent sound, solid control, and it’s quick as hell. Highly recommended.
